Does a musical act's image influence your opion of them?

Seems to an old fogey (me) that when the young 'uns discuss music, often the discussion turns to the performer's music video or general image. I could say something like, "so-and-so's music sucks" and the response will be, "who cares? She's hot!"

So, the question - does the video, or overall "image" of the performer influence your opinion of the music?

I usually give the benefit of the doubt to a new act if they are ugly. If they are not ugly, I might be more skeptical as to their talent.

Uh no. But that doesn't mean she's not fun to look at. I don't know anybody who listens to music they don't really like just because they think somebody's attractive. Since you can't see them what's the point then? Going to concerts make a bit of sense, since you're actually seeing the person.

You wouldn't listen to someone cause they were hot, but you would probably turn away from making that someone one of your "favourites" if they are ugly/physically unappealing. If you like someone's music, chances are you will research them, and follow them. Being hot makes that funner and easier.

Not really. I'm a metal head, and the metal bands are pretty well known for producing the ugliest/weirdest looking folk in music. It doesn't affect me one bit. Yeah watching Lacuna Coil is funner than other bands, but they aren't a favorite by any means and I wouldn't like them any less if the singer wasn't crazy hot.

Yes, and I'm taking this in a different direction. I'm not a big metal head, but I like some black metal. I have a hard time with their ridiculous costumes and imagery. I could take them much more seriously if they just played their music.

Back in the old days, the only way we saw the musicians was in some album art. And sometimes not even then.

Same

I don't even know what a lot of the bands I like look like, except the handful I've seen in concert.

Yes. Bands that try overly hard to create an "image" for themselves bother me.

Somewhat. If a band looks like, say, Avenged Sevenfold (oh, can't forget their stupid fucking "names") then I'd never listen to them.

Yes. It gives subtle color to the attitude of the music. It can ruin or improve music. It can make me never listen to them ever again. It can also turn so-so music into something pretty fun (Lordi :p).

Ya, thinking it over, that only really applies to superficial/pop music. If some of my favourite female lead bands/acts were ugly, I wouldn't give two shits. Then again, I don't 'love' the superficial stuff all that much. Having a nice image sure makes them funner to follow though.

I have a problem with a lot of bands that try to create an image for themselves instead of just playing music.

I have no problem with a band like GWAR, because it's all one big joke and it's not serious. But, I can't stand a lot of the bands that try to sell some satanic image to make their music seem more "dark" and "evil". It's lame. Slayer jumps to mind. They would have been so much better if they weren't trying SO damn hard to look satanic and sell that image.

Marilyn Manson is the same way. King Diamond is silly.

And Black Metal, WTF is up with those fucking losers. Killing each other and doing all kinds of crazy shit. Norwegian and Swedish death metal scense are just pathetic.

You can watch those with the sound on? That's worse than waterboarding, you must be tough as nails.
