Does a matched set of ram matter for Core Duo?

it gives you a better chance of having a successful dual channel setup. if you run dual channel, they at least should be the same model/manufacturer. but, they dont neccessarily have to be "matched".
 
I recommend matched sets to overcome any compatibility problems. Same make etc, is the way to go.
You can sometimes get Samsungs for some great prices on eBay, but its your choice.
