Does a laptop need a UPS?

Maybe this is just a newbie question, but I'm thinking about getting a new laptop, and using it plugged in at home, where the power may not always be the cleanest. I know that a good surge protector is important, but what happens in a brownout? Should I get a UPS, or will the battery automatically kick in with low voltage?
Thanks

You're battery will kick in. I think a UPS on anything other than something critical is pointless, but if you have the money....

If you have bad quality AC, it can affect your battery and laptop. A UPS that cleans up the voltage would help, and they can be had for $99. Since you no doubt spent a chunk of change on a laptop, it might be a worthy consideration if you know your AC lines are faulty.
