Does a DVI adapter work the same as a DVI cable?

Does a DVI adapter convert the signal to analog? If I want real DVI, do I need a full DVI cable?

DVI-D if I am not mistaken is "digital only"

The DVI adapter is actually a DVI_A_M

A DVI adapter is usually a cable that will connect a standard VGA monitor (15-pin HD D-Sub) to a DVI-I output (that's the one that can drive both types of monitor). Other than that, as Bozo said.
