i ask because i don't plan on moving to an LCD just yet, but most video cards don't come with a dsub conneciton, but has the converter.

well when you go from DVI-DSUB, you are going from digital to analog so yes there degradation of the signal. But, it you aren't going to be able to notice.

No you're not "going from digital to analog", you're simply using the analog signal on the DVI-I plug.

You will be able to notice, depending on how good your monitor is at converting from analog to digital convertor.
Well, unless you meant a dvi to dsub converter hooking up to a CRT, in which case you're fine, it's analog all the way through despite starting at a dvi connector.

Converting a D-Sub signal to a DVI-D one will result in quality loss (and you'll pay $100 for devices that do this). Going from a DVI-I signal to a D-Sub one (like the adapter included along with your video card) will not result in anything significant, although the longer the connection the less the quality. The adapter simply uses the DVI-A connector embedded in the DVI-I output which is purely analog.

Edit: terms got interchanged

yeah i have a 19" trinitron monitor that has a dsub connection. i was wondering if i connect my monitor to a dsub to dvi converter, then attach the converter to the dvi-i on a video card. so this won't degrade quality??

You're doing DVI to dsub, not dsub to DVI.

Connecting to a DVI to dsub converter vs. straight dsub out of a videocard shouldn't worry you.
