i am thinking of getting a digital antenna for my tv. but my does NOT have a digital tuner and either way the the digital tuner will be plugged into the analog tuner. so my question is do i need a digital tv (?) or do i just need to connect a digitalantenna to my current tv to get Digital broadcast.

i understand i won't get HDTV content without a HDTV. i just wanna know if i can get DTV

Yes you need a digital TV to watch HD. The signals are totally different. Your TV can't "see" them.

Edit: There is also no difference between a digital antenna and an analog antenna. They work the same.

The quality will be exactly the same unless your TV has an ATSC (digital) tuner.

Most of those are UHF antennas which is where currently it seems most of the HDTV channels are being broadcast.

If you hook those up to your regular TV you'll see analog SD television.

You can't receive the digital broadcasts. They are broadcast in ATSC digital, which your analog TV wouldn't know what to do with.

The point is the antenna is the same, but you need a digital TV to receive digital signals.

there are converter boxes for sale on EBay, isn't that what's needed for an analog TV to receive digital signals? now trying to get an older TV to work on all non-cable channels

The boxes lie. There is no such thing as a digital / analog antenna. Just an antenna. The tuner you connect it to can be digital or analog.

Those neato futuristic designs don't do jack for reception or quality. The old-school wiry aerial antenna is still the best.

If noob legitimately found this thread while google-ing, then other people will find it too. At least they'll find it with an updated answer ("get a converter box").

Does it look as cool as this, though?

The old antennas had to be as good as possible to get decent picture quality. With digital, the antennas just have to be good ENOUGH...meaning that you can just get the smallest/simplest one that receives the channels you need, and put the rest of your points into "style".

Or get a high-quality, roof-mounted "analog" antenna for pennies on craigslist and receive signal from across the country

The one nice thing about analogue is you could usually pull in something, even if reception wasn't great. Digital is all or nothing. I used to be able to pull in stations out of Buffalo using the rabbit ears on my old portable TV, but not anymore.

I had to use DTV when my satellite switcher got fried a couple months back. Those indoor antennas are now as useless as tits on a bull.

when i first moved into my house i bought 1 of those flat indoor wall antennas because i thought i'd just watch most stuff online and saved on cable/satellite but the damn thing didn't work at all. not a single channel.

There's a whole science to antennas but in reality unless you're trying to get a signal that's very weak or far practically anything works. You can just stick a piece of wire in the coax jack and string it somewhere and you should get a half decent signal.

I was curious and stuck a piece of wire in my HDTV's antenna jack and I get Global channel in crystal clear HD. There's two other channels but they're super snowy, I'd probably want a better antenna for those. I just did it out of curiosity though so never bothered to do much else after that.

Same here, so how come everyone says the signal is "all or nothing"?

Some channels pixilate, sound comes and goes etc.

I'm sure someone has a better explanation.

Yup. Those little ones are only OK if you live in the city or close enough to the city where all the local TV stations are.
