Does a BTX case require a BTX power supply?

I was given a new Gateway computer that uses a BTX motherboard and case design. I want to upgrade the graphics and need a new power supply. Do I need a BTX power supply or will an ATX one work?

What graphics card? Your current PSU may be fine for it, as most OEM's understate their PSU's. I've had a 512MB X1900 XTX running fine with a Dell PSU stated at 375W. 😀

I currently have a 300W power supply that does not have a PCI-E power line. I want to upgrade to a GeForce 7950GT.

For a video card like that, you may want to upgrade to a PSU that has PCI-E power connectors.

Agreed. That card will suck some major juice.

Ha! Most! More like a select handful. 10 OEMs or so will rate their PSUs for less then they can actually put out.

BTW, your Dell PSU was probably OEMed by either Lite-On, Delta, or FSP. Depending on the age of the system, but those are all decent OEMs, actually FSP produces the least quality products.

If I understand, the BTX motherboards need a 24 pin connector. Some ATX power supplies have 20+4, but others have only 20. However, I think that you can get an adapter to convert them.

No, BTX is more of a case design and it only really helped Intel I am pretty sure Intel diched the idea now that they have the 65mm cores.
