Does 8X agp video card work on mobo that has only 4x?

I have an older 440bx chipset motherboard that has only 4x agp. I was thinking of upgrading the tnt2 that is in there right now. Will it work if I buy a newer video card like a 9600pro that says 8x agp. I mean can the video card set to run at a lower speed of 4x that my motherboard supports?
Thanks for any info!

it will default to the highest speed the mobo supports, and should work just fine. bro has a 9600 pro, his asus board with 8xagp died so hes using an ecs board with 4xagp

a bit slower, but not a problem, nothing to worry about

8x 4x and 2x are all backwards compatible. The only thing you need to worry about is the voltage on 2x cards and 2x slots (3.3V instead of 1.5V on a 4x\8X slot)

I used to run a 8X card on my 440BX (Intel SX440BX-2 mobo) and it worked fine (but I put it in my other computer when I upgraded).

I'm doing just that with my Radeon 9600 Pro right now with no problems. Except that when I turn Fast Write on I get tons of visual errors, but I think it's my board because I have had this problem with other video cards.

A 440BX chipset based motherboard only supports AGP2X. You would need a "Universal" AGP8X card which supports AGP2X voltages in order for it to work.

AGP8X voltages are 0.8 volts and 1.5 volts. AGP2X is 3.3 volts.

AGP8X cards are only compatible down to AGP4X. AGP2X and AGP1X boards are not supposed to be compatible.

SpeedFreak03: I'm a little surprised that your situation worked.

Thanks for clarify that the 440bx only supports agp2x. So as long as the mobo supports 4x, then it is compatible with 8x, so something like a via apollo 133 which has agp 4x would work with 8x cards right?
BTW, how much of a decrease in performance happens from running 8x cards at 4x?
