A different router could possibly help since its obvious some routers perform better than others. With that said, switching to g doesn't neccesarily mean you'll get more range.

It's not always the routers fault though. I have a D-Link router and NIC, 802.11B. My friend brought his box over, he has a Belkin NIC, and he had a stronger signal than me. I'm about 8ft. away from the router and he was about 20ft.
