Does 60 GB PS3 have full backward support?

I read the report here and still come out confused.

"Reeve was asked why SCEA would choose the slightly larger hard drive if it isn?t necessary. 'The difference is that the 60GB we have now has about 88 per cent backwards compatibility,' Reeve replied, referencing the difference in backwards compatibility hardware. 'The 60GB they had had 100 per cent backwards compatibility. They felt that by going down for 100 to 88, for example, that they'd have to add something in ? and that's what they did.' "

So do all 60 GB PS3s have 100% backwards compatibility?" If 100% backward compatibility won't be an option in the near future then I better get mine.

The US 60GB PS3s have 100% compatibility because they have a hardware chip in the system. The European ones have 88% because they just have software emulation instead of the actual chip. When all the US 60gb systems with the chip sell out, Sony will stop making any systems with a chip.

I've thought of buying one because of the chip as well, but I seriously doubt that I'd want to play any of the other 12% of games that wouldn't work. If it was good enough for me to play, they'd make it work.

Right, Sony has a much easier time improving the software BC than Microsoft since Sony owns the PS2 hardware/software design while MS didn't pay for the nvidia IP used in xbox1.

Sony has written a general-purpose emulator that doesn't need profiles for every game, so new games will run (barring emulation glitches) without needing to wait for a quarterly update. They can still tweak the emulator with game-specific code to fix any game-specific problems.

its not a big deal since pretty much all of the good games are compatible. i think you'll be fine either way.

I agree with them. I'm not sure which games don't work, but you can bet the most popular ones all do.

you don't have to buy the 60gb. even without the emotion engine, sony can continue bringing out updates for backwards compatibility through software rather than hardware

so it doesnt matter..get whichever one you want

It's not 100% compatible...probably really close, though. There are still some issues with some games, and the games still look slightly better on the PS2.

They update the BC through firmware updates often enough, so that 88% should keep growing.

Basically, any game thats worth playing will be compatible probably.

Wasnt there an issue with FF7 on the PS3? Thats probably the only PS1 game I would play if I had a PS3. 🙂 I still play it today, albeit the PC version, but occasionally I will pop it into my PS2 and laugh at the God awful graphics. 🙂
