You'd almost be better off paying the last guy on the chain to install a microwave link for you & leech off his connection.

The reason I tried to advise you is because people are always trying stuff like this themselves with horrible consequences.

We had a guy last year that thought he could "hook-up" his new mobile home to our electric lines himself. He too was in the sticks were nobody could see him.

I guess he didn't realize what a transformer's purpose was. He some how manage to climb the pole with logger's hooks and then proceeded to attempt to attach the wires he had rigged into his breaker box to our 14,400 volt primary voltage wires.

To make a long story short it resulted in:

A) One lost arm
B) 3rd degree burns
C) One fscked-up mobile home

You can also try Starband it's not good for gaming but it will handle your surfing and download needs. It's expensive though. About $500 dollars for the equipment and $70 dollars a month for the service.

If your neighbor's willing and you can get a clear line-of-sight between someplace near your house and his, you could setup an 802.11b network, using directional antennas. Check out this article:

http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/wireless/2001/05/03/longshot.html

They were able to get a connection going that was 5 miles long. The article mentions an attempt to at 20+ miles, but I couldn't find the followup article.
