Does 19"CRT = 17" LCD?

AnyMal

I am looking at Dell 1704FP for $238 shipped at Dell Outlet. It has all the specs I want, except it's a 17". I currently have a 19" CRT and am comfortable with its size, don't really need anything bigger.

So the question is, will I see a noticable size difference or are they close enough sizewise?

Generally you subtract and inch from CRTs to get the viewable image size, so your 19" CRT is 18" viewable.

On an LCD, you just take the size as the screen size.

So, a 17" LCD is just an inch smaller diagonally than a 19" CRT.

I have two 19" CRTs and a 17" LCD. The LCD feels the same size, but I know it's an inch smaller.

So we're not talkibg about a BIG difference right? Or will the diffrence be apparent? I have a 19" LCD at work and it does feel bigger then my home CRT.

One thing to be careful about, though, is that(as has been said) although the size diffirence won't be all that noticable, other characteristics may be. LCDs and CRTs are, often, diffirent from one another in how reflective their screens are, how "sharp" or "blurred" individual pixels are, how much curvature there is to their screen, etc. If you are just doing a drop in replacement, you'll stop noticing those in a couple of days, unless you are quite serious about certain specs; but if you want to run them side by side you may really, really begin to notice the diffirences between LCD and CRT(I've run into a bit of this going back and forth between my laptop and the server console).

Look into the 1801fp, I have it. Great monitor.

Yeah, I can't stand LCDs. The size shouldn't be very noticable, but make sure you like looking at LCDs before you buy one.

If you want to get a feel of how big the screen will be, get out a tape measurer and adjust the size of the image on your monitor until it's 17" diagonally.

I am aware of the differnce in sharpness and pic quality. But having to spend 10-12 hours daily in fron of the monitor may spare my eyes a bit longer. I am willing to take a trade off.

Another question, does Dell bundle DVI cable with their aLCD's or will I have to purchase it separately?

BTW, I appreciate all the answers.

I think Dell LCDs with DVI come with the appropriate cables. My last personal experience was with one of their LCD TVs, which did.

Dell LCDs (1901FPs did at least) a USB A-B cable, a DVI cable, a VGA cable, and a power cable... all black.
