DOD Secret Clearance

How do you get DOD secret clearance for a job?

I see a few jobs that say you need DOD secret clearance, so I looked up secret clearance and one place says that you can't get secret clearance as an individual, your employer or agency has to get it for you.

So basically I have to be given secret clearance from a previous job to apply for these?

TSC is valid for a certain period of time, after which it must be renewed. If you don't already have clearance from a previous employer or government service, you'll have to ask the potential employer if they'd be willing to sponsor you for application. Be prepared to wait at least 6 months for processing if you're a civilian though.

You get hired for a job that requires it, THEN they go through the process of getting you vetted and applying for clearance.

My last job was supposed to get me cleared. They fucked it up (partly my fault), and hence I'm not cleared. Part of the reason I no longer work for them (not because I wasn't cleared, because THEY didn't fix it).

either have one from previous job, or get hired by a company that will put you in for one. can usually get an interim/temporary DoD secret in a couple weeks. i think most major players in the MIC would sponsor for a qualified employee. smaller companies probably just poach from the larger

Yes.

no way to get secret clearance otherwise?

Read my post... you may need to ask whether these companies you're looking at will clear you. You CAN get hired and they can go through the process themselves, only if they want to. Because it can get expensive though, they'll likely prefer existing clearance.

If it's really a secret clearance, how do you know you don't have it already?

Usually the FBI's anal probe gives it away.

As mentioned already, the job will get you the clearance if you require it.

You can't just apply for a clearance; the backlog would be ridiculous.

anal probe is just for a TS. secret is rather easy to come by. I think wal-mart sells them in 3 packs for $10.

If the description is requiring a clearance, most likely they don't want to pay to sponsor you for one, so they're looking for people who already have one. Also it takes several months at a minimum to get it, so if the job requires it all the time they probably don't want to pay you to sit around for six+ months until it comes through.

You can try to convince them to hire you anyway and sponsor you, but it's probably not going to work unless you get really lucky.

No. You need to have a valid reason to obtain a clearance. You can't just "apply" for a clearance.

i want to get clearance so i can apply for jobs that require it...

Read my post very, very carefully.

yes i know...i was explaining that the reason i wanted to get it wasn't "just because"

One of the perks that I'll get out of the military is that I'll get out with a little bit of mine left as long as they don't screw me.

no you need to have a valid reason to get clearance. as in they need a reason to give you clearance, and since you have no need to see any secret items at the moment, you have no reason. hence, you must get a job and then have a need to know secret material before you can get investigated to get secret clearance, but you cannot get the job without already having secret clearance. there are some companies hiring that are willing to hire you first then have the investigation run on you, look for those instead of the ones that require you to already have clearance.

i was hired by a staffing agency that worked with DoD contractors. I was hired on for a helpdesk position that required it.

For you, your best bet is to contact a staffing agency that deals primarily with DoD contractors and by placing you in a spot that requires the clearance you will be able to apply for the clearance.

1. Look into the phrase "Need to Know." Without a job requiring it, you don't have it.
2. Be careful what you post on Anandtech, they can monitor it.

With certain jobs/positions, you can sometimes get an interim clearance fast, also depends on the sponsoring agent. An interim secret will allow you to access most Secret Data (exceptions do exist).

I had to go through just the CI poly, was 2.5 hours, bad enough.
