DoD : S HDR

While this technology is great I see a division of gaming online starting. HDR is awesome for games such as DoD:S and stepping around the corner to get a eye full of sun is great. However, some gamers simply cannot run this so they, righly so, disable it. That eye full of sun now has the ability to give the non-HDR user the upperhand in some cases of gameplay where fast reaction off a corner means life or death.

Conversly, people that can use HDR but turn it off to level the playing field OR turn it off to gain a tactical advantage are starting to rise up. What are some thoughts people have concerning this? Will the 6600GT and below owners actually have tactical advantages over 6800GTs, X800XL ownsers and up? If so, how should we approach this imbalance? Could Steam have a server setting that forces HDR on/off so there is a level playing field all around?

Comments welcome.

Steam couldn't force it anyways. I understand your concern. From my understanding if x800xl, gt6800 or so wants to have the same playing field they can as well turn off HDR. I personally don't use it. I just want to play the DOD:S without the HDR less taxing on my poor laptop. Unless they later fix it where HDR's built into the engine and is enabled on all the time, we will be seeing a tons of revolting...

There's lots of things that have this kind of reaction though. Resolution. It's much easier to snipe with higher resolutions. There can't be a game where people hide in the dark because they could always turn up the brightness. I had a problem with brightness earlier before my monitor was probably calibrated, I couldn't easily spot people in DOD, but turning up the brightness certainly helped me kick ass. Now HDR. EA still says widescreen resolutions are cheating, which means that 5:4 LCDs everywhere have a disadvantage. Then you could also argue that having a CRT at 120Hz and low graphics settings to get the best speed could be an advantage due to lower latency. Same with connection latency.

There's just so many arguements.

Their are times where HDR being on will blind you where as non HDR would not be blinded. Some good ideas here. I guess if you wanted to truely dominate if something like enjoying the realism HDR adds must be set aside.

HDR isn't bad, I've never had it affect my gameplay; there's no glare, just bright and dark... you still see the silhouette.

I've played more with it off than on, but that's more because I never played DoD, and was trying to get used to what I was supposed to be doing.

I generally crank down the pretty settings in all fps' anyway to up my f(rames)ps.

After I've seen the pretty stuff the first time around, I don't notice it when I'm trying to hunt down the other team :).

I actually need HDR on to play properly; it lightens up the game. Without it, everything becomes dark, and then I have to turn up the gamma/brightness.
