Again, he is an anesthesiologist. During a surgery, they spend about 10 minutes putting you to sleep, they twiddle their thumbs for the rest of the case while a nurse watches your numbers and hangs bags, and spend 15 minutes waking you up.

There is a good 45 m to ?hours they don't even look at the patient. Unless it is a critical case (open heart, major vascular surgery, etc.), they usually don't even sit in the room.

are you actually saying its no big deal?

Texting while working? Yes, it is no big deal.

This isn't like if they move their eyes off the patient they are going to die. It is sitting around in case a monitor goes off. I kid you not they are usually reading or playing candy crush during the down time. There is a lot of time "during a surgery" that nothing is going on.
They aren't scrubbed in. They are sitting in the back just in case... And usually it isn't the Doctor... it is again a CRNA.

In fact, while I, and every surgeon ever, am actively sewing or cutting people often we are having conversations about movies we watched, or songs that are playing on the radio, or whoever is on American Idol this week. It is like a hair dressing salon.

It is amazing that people can do two things at once.
