DOCSIS 3.1, need modem/phone controller unit...with complications

I'm a Cox customer in Rhode Island. In order for me to get the top speed tier from Cox (we have the second fastest tier now), they say I will need to get a DOCSIS 3.1 modem. The problem is that I currently have a Cisco DPQ3212 combo modem/phone controller unit. My router is a Netgear Nighthawk X4S R7800.

Cox's private label 'Panoramic WiFi' (model TG2472 or TG1682) internet & phone modem I believe is an Arris. It seems tough to get DOCSIS 3.1 with a combo modem similar to the Cisco I currently have. Also, is there a way to use my Netgear router with a DOCSIS 3.1 combo modem from someone?

As you can see, I'm not really sure what the heck I'm talking about.

Here is Cox's own listed certified modems. https://www.cox.com/residential/support/cox-certified-cable-modems.html

If Cox wants to keep your VOIP service, don't they have any EMTA modem that's Docsis 3.1 compliant?

Do you really need Cox's phone service?

You can buy Ooma Telo (at Amazon, Bestbuy, Costco, etc), and use it's VOIP service( about $4 monthly fee), pair it with a Docsis 3.1 modem.

Then you don't need an EMTA device from Cox that's not Docsis 3.1.

You can keep your current Netgear WiFi Router.

It maybe best to call them and send out a tech. I's also possible that they can split the coax into two. One goes to your current modem/phone where they'll send it a signal to become your phone only and the other can be your 3.1 Internet modem.

I have friends who have tv/internet/phone through their cable company and that's how they have it setup. The tech used a 3-way splitter to connect their DVR, their main cable modem/wireless for internet, and then also what looks like an older cable modem/router with VOIP and a battery backup just for their phone.

I went the Ooma route myself.

If you do want to go with just a modem, I use the Arris SB8200. I have noticed some weird dips at times, but I'm not sure if it's the service or my specific modem. Sometimes, I'm never sure if Amazon sent me a return or a new item, and I think my modem may've been the prior. :\

To replace my 4 year old Cisco DPQ3212 DOCSIS 3.0 modem/router/phone controller I just got the Cox combo unit which is an Arris TG1682 with DOCSIS 3.1. It was an easy installation, removing the Cisco and my Netgear router and hooking up the Cox/Arris TG1682. Running speedtest from the Cox site, first time speeds were 373 Mbps DL / 33 Mbps UL. Ran a second time... 444 Mbps DL / 36 Mbps UL.

Yes, mybad. It seems that the newer 3.1's are just a router or they lack the telephone capability. I'm happy with this Cox/Arris TG1682

Besides the Arris TM3402 which i mentioned earlier...?

DOCSIS 3.1 with Telephone. Just doesn't have built in Wifi.

I was in too much of a hurry to dump the Cisco DPQ3212 and up-speed my connection (had huge web slowdown for last 3 weeks or so), so I didn't research other options. The folks in my local Cox store claimed to not know about 3.1 nor any roll out for faster speeds than 'Ultimate' here. (Rhode Island) They said if something available coming up I can switch out for that hardware.

I ended up with a bill only $5 more (6 months promo) with the TG1682 and highest tier speed available now in this area. I'm getting @ 444 Mbps DL / 38 Mbps UL now. I'm suddenly less of a mediocre player in Battlefield 1 (FPS online multiplayer).
