DOCSIS 3.0 modem - any benefits?

I am on Comcast Performance Internet - 25 mpbs

The Motoralla DOCSIS 2.0 modem I currently have supports upto 38 mpbs.

So is there any real advantage for me to upgrade the cable modem? I have read conflicting things about it, including on this forum here.

Comcast has been sending letters asking to upgrade.

Thanks for any input.

I assume you own your current Moto Modem? In their letters, are they offering free rental of a DOCSIS 3 modem?

Anyone know, would they be phasing out DOCSIS 2 modems as part of an upgrade?

Current one is Motorolla too. I own it and if I upgrade I would buy the new one.

I dont think they have any plans to phase out 2.0

Docsis 2.0 modems are end-of-life on Comcast. They have been urging customers to upgrade them for over a year.

As for what will the upgrade give you?
Maybe more stable speeds. Eventually your device will stop being supported, but who knows when. You probably won't get the next speed upgrade they do if you stay on a docsis 2.0 modem.

I get ~55-58mb down in my neighborhood with docsis 3 on Comcast's 25mb plan. I topped out around 29mb on my old docsis 2 modem.

My docsis 2 was over 9 years old. I got my money's worth.

Funny thing is Comcast called me two days ago to try and get me to pay more for their 50mb plan. lol

Some people were upgraded from 25-> 50Mbps for no charge. Are you on a double or triple play (tv, phone etc)? If so, you probably got the free upgrade.

Same here. I was capping around 30mpbs with 25Mbps service then Blast! was offered free and I was still hitting that mark. Got the updated Arriss modem and my speeds have been in the 40-50Mbps range since.

You gain the benefit of channel hopping on most of the lower tier plans. Since 2.0 is single channel, if it is overloaded you get latency and slow downloads. Even with a slower account a 3.0 modem can jump to one of the other 4 to 8 channels. Assuming a DOCSIS 3.0 head end.
