Docking station question

I'm going to build a new machine in the near future and would like to include an external HDD docking station. What features should I look at in a motherboard to get the most out of a docking station? Do I need eSata, USB3, ETC?

What about hot swapping the drives. What's needed for that? Obviously, I know nothing about this so any info or direction to a website would be appreciated. Also, any suggestions for a docking station would be appreciated also.

AFAIK, the only need for a docking station would be a laptop. Desktops do not usually need that as they are expandable. What you might ought to consider is a NAS. I use external drives on two system (Vantec BexStar 3) and they are hot swappable. I turn 'em on and off as I need them.

Yes, I use that same enclosure and it has worked well. Just thought docking station would allow use of several HDD's without multiple enclosures, and faster connection of HDD to computer (no cables to hook up).
