Uncle sends me this:
I need a docking station: mouse, keyboard and flat panel display for my new laptop. If possible I would like to share the display.

I recently bought him a 700m and he likes it, but I guess he would prefer a bigger keyboard/mouse/display for home use. Now, does he necessarily need a docking station? Couldn't he just get a Dell 1905FP and a USB keyboard/mouse, hook those up, press F6 and be done with it?

Couldn't he then use that setup + KVM Switch?

I'm not too familiar with docking stations and the such.

Any help is appreciated.

Yes he could just do that, however...
Docking stations are very nice especially if he is going to take the computer to work/home regularly. Then all you have to do is drop it into the station and you do not have to reconnect any specific cables. Also, I don't know about the 700m but many computers gain a DVI port by placing it in the station, thus on the 1905fp it will look better by using the DVI port.
If I was going to have a laptop as my only machine I would definately get a docking station, it just makes things a bit easier. (You don't have to even open up the notebook to mess with the settings you can just leave it closed and drop it in.

This is of course just my opinion, but it can be done without the dock. I don't think it would be a waste of money to get the dock, so if he has the money and wants it go for it. Just see if you can use a coupon on it to make it a little bit cheaper.

edit:
There appears not to be an appropriate dock for the 700m probably because it is quite a new model. All the current ones on dell's website do is replicate some of the ports, but aren't the nice docks with dvi etc. So really i don't know what to tell you on this one. maybe just make sure the monitor has a usb hub in it and get a USB keyboard and mouse so all the cables are easily routed (only 2 need to be connected as well)

They don't make a docking station for the 700m. Yes, you can hook up a keyboard/video/mouse to the laptop to use it with full sized peripherals. Yes, he could also use this with a KVM.
