Theres a co worker here at work who has problem opening .doc files, as soon as she opens 'em they seem fine, and than about 5-10 seconds later it gives a message saying the file is corrupt and word needs to be closed she got a new computer with office xp on win2k and her old one she believes had office 97 maybe even 95, is there a conversion thing that must be done?
Thanks

The newer versions of Word should have no problem reading old files.

If the files were saved from a newer version and an older version is trying to read them, then it will be a big problem.

Can the documents be read on her old system?

the old systems gone, so I can't tell, but her "workaround" is to open the file quickly select all and copy, and than paste it into a new file. but thats a bit tedious and she had alot files:p

Does the problem exist with another system or just on hers. IF another system is clean, have that system try to edit a file and save it. Then she can try it on her system. IF it fails on hers only, then she has a corruption problem, :( time to houseclean:disgust:

Just went and looked at it, when you open the doc file up it says the table has been corrupted and you can convert it to text, and than it jumbles up the tables, going to try it on another computer and see if it still happens and try some doc recovery programs see if they help

I used a program called wordrecovery and it fixed the tables. I was wondering now if theres a cheaper alternative .doc recovery program, that one was $150 for a single license. Thanks for your help so far
