This summer I will be purchasing a doberman pinscher puppy and I was wondering if any of you guys have had a dobe. If you have, please answer the following questions:
1. What color is your dobe?
2. If your dobe is/was a dilute color (fawn or blue) did it have any problems associated with the dilution?
3. What gender was your dobe?
4. Good characteristics of a dobe?
5. Bad characteristics of a dobe?

Thanks in advance!

I used to be a veterinary technician... one of the vets I worked for had a dobe, and it was a noble beast. A few of my friends have had them as well... really an excellent choice, IMO.

I've only known the standard black and tans and the coppers/reds... one black and tan was a bit skittish and spastic but she grew more calm and cooridinated with maturity.

Just don't buy a scared or skittish pup... buy one that is clearly happy and sociable. That goes for any animal.

Awesome, I'm glad that you've had good experiences :) I'm going to be living off campus in a house next year and I'd like a medium sized dog for protection. I've wanted a dobe since I was little and I think they're the perfect choice, I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't missing something.

Red dobie, female, very gentle personality, very smart, but they usually have heart issues, although at 11 she is doing ok so far, loves people and other pets, highly recommended, oh and has her ears, dont crop its torture and leads to infections!
Oh and we adopted her at 4 and we think she was beaten as she was very foot shy, but training and a good house and she came around. Never met a bad dobie, owners on the ohter hand......

My dad has had 3 over the years, each named Harley. They are as smart as some 10 year old humans. VERY loyal, excellent temperaments. Training for the owner and dog is HIGHLY recommended.
Down sides .... They need excersize, so don't expect to keep it cooped up and not have some issues. The hip dysplasia thing.

If a breeder has OFA certified dogs hip dysplasia shouldn't be a problem. As far as the exercise thing goes, I'll have a backyard and consider myself a fairly active person.

Had several. Great dogs. I'd look for a mellower one as ours were always overly playful which was cool, but they were always jumping and nudging and whatnot. We had the standard black ones.

I'd never own any other kind of dog.

That will be largely up to you. You need to socailize them with both people and other animals when they are young.

Two red dobies

I have a friend with a fawn and she has no problems. However problems are common and according to the vet tech SO you should put them on omega fatty acids to help avoid skin and coat problems.
3. What gender was your dobe?
I have both a male and a female doberman, the fawn my friend owns is female.
4. Good characteristics of a dobe?
Loyal, obedient, intelligent (we taught the female five weeks worth of training within a single day), protective, loving.
5. Bad characteristics of a dobe?
Attention whores. My 90lb doberman thinks he is a yorkie when it comes time to chill out on the couch and will lay his head on me or even lay in my lap! The female is still young and she can be pretty excitable, I recommend meeting the parents.

One somewhat negative thing about dobermans is they are more likely to contract parvo.

Thanks in advance!

The male doberman was recieved from rescue. It took him some time to get used to the five cats that we have (i know, i know) but he adjusted well. He is a very laid back doberman. The female can by hyper at times, she will chase the cats however this tends to be because a cat first chases her and hits her on the behind and runs off. She has never bitten any of the cats but when she was very young we had to break her of gumming them trying to get them to play.

I suggest meeting the parents of the doberman before making a decision. Some lineages tend to be hyper and some very mellow. I would also supervise the introduction of any smaller animals so that you can help your puppy adjust to its new lifestyle especially if the breeder has no cats.

Look for a breeder that is seeking to improve the line - not a breeder who is trying to mate their dogs so they can make some extra cash. :)

Good luck with your doberman they are the best breed in my opinion.

What kind of dog do you have? I have a 90lb male doberman, these are dogs that have been used for police dogs, war dogs in WW2, tracking dogs, protective dogs, companion animals, agility champions.. they do very well in schutzhund training.

Sounds awesome. So there aren't any bad things about your dobes? Are they very protective of you and their "turf"?

Ok, another question...how much can I expect to pay for a doberman puppy? I just talked to a few breeders and it's $1000 and up for a PET puppy!

Dobermans can be great dogs, but my buddy had a somewhat bad experience with one.

His parents bought a doberman for his little brother, who was like 8 or so at the time. They really formed a bond, and did everything together. Unfortunately, they formed such a bond that the dog was OVERLY protective of him. After cornering my friends mom a few times and biting his dad during a mealtime, they had to put it down. A dog that size and that tenacious isn't for everybody. But its kinda sad, because the dog really didn't know any better, but it had become dangerous somehow.

It was a male, not fixed, and was probably about 90 lbs. Wanted to hump EVERYTHING.

If they would've gotten the dog neutered and had some corrective behavior training I bet that could've solved the problem...breeders recommend neutering pet dogs for a reason :)

I'm not a fan of the breed. But, I live in Alaska and dobe fur doesn't exactly cut it in 0 degree weather.
