DOA or Did I Fry it?

I just bought a new AMD XP chip from Newegg and a Soyo Dragon Plus.

I'm using the stock heatsink and fan, and everything is plugged in correctly. Upon turning on the power, I hear a pop, and then I smell something burning.

Turned it off, and the CPU has been discolored in the center, and smells 🙁

I have not overclocked. Could this have been Neweggs fault?

Thanks!

Was the heat sink all way down on the core?
I have heard of people that did not get the HS on right and there was a small gap between the HS and the core of the Athlon. If that was the case it will blow after maybe 10 seconds or less.

Chargrilled XP, yummmmmmmmy.

How many heatsinks have you applied? Was it installeed and seated properly? Was there any thermal compound on the heatsink?

How many heatsinks have you applied before? Your unfortunate incident sounds like an installation fault.

I've applied several heatsinks before without problems.

I guess I'll give Newegg a call and see if I can get a new one.

Or should I call AMD?

Regarding CPU's after 30 days (usually):

OEM = vendor does RMA
Retail = Mfg does RMA

Since it's a recently bought retail CPU (you did say stock HSF) you should be able to get a replacement through NewEgg. If NewEgg will not honor their warranty due to user error or because it is retail, you can try AMD. Here's the info from AMD's site:

Processor In a Box Warranty:
AMD provides a three (3) year limited warranty on its line of boxed microprocessors. To obtain warranty service for your AMD microprocessor, contact your computer system manufacturer, distributor or reseller during the systems warranty period. After your computer system warranty has expired, you should contact AMD at (408) 749-AMD9 in the U.S. only, fax 852-295-63996 in Asia, and 44 (0) 1276-803187 in Europe. Please be prepared to provide:

Your name, address, and telephone number;
Proof of purchase (including place and date product purchased). You will be asked to fax or e-mail this verification to AMD;
Description of the type of processor you have (K6-2, K6-III, Athlon, or Duron);
Confirmation that the product to which you are inquiring is a retail Process in a Box (with heatsink and fan attached), and not a non-boxed product (processor only);
A description of the computer system including the brand and model;
The brand, model, and revision number of the motherboard supporting the processor and confirmation that the motherboard appears on the AMD Athlon Processor, AMD Duron Processor, or AMD-K6 Family Processor approved motherboard list;
An explanation of the problem.

I don't think SOYO is on AMD's recommended motherboard list though...

Here's Newegg's return policy as well:
There is no replacement or refund guarantee of any kind for any retail package processors, routers, software, blank media cartridges, or any specially ordered items. There is likewise no replacement or refund guarantee covering any product that is affected by any "Year 2000" compliance problem.

I don't know if your aware that the heatsink can only go on one direction. Otherwise the raised portion of the socket (which I personally don't understand why they just can't change the socket specs to avoid this issue) can hold up your heatsink and if it don't make contact then POP. You might get a POP if your fan wasn't turning, but it would take awhile and I kind of doubt whether it would POP like that. It would just roast until it turned off (usually has time to cook the thermal compound). POP is usually from no contact with heatsink, so the thermal rise is extreme which causes that hot/cold layer in material that is so violent. Violent = POP..........🙂
