Do your employers ever verify your credentials (ie College diploma)?

Depends on the employer. Most probably trust that your not lying on a resume or application. Larger corporations that do background checks usually do. Again it all depends on the employer.

A friend of mine had unpaid parking tickets his last year in school and did not tell him about. He finished his last semeseter and went on looking for a job. So he applied at the local FBI fingerprint center doing database work they told him the school would not release his transcripts because he owed them money.

A lot depends on the type of position or does the salary scale compenstate you for a higher education.

I have had an employer start to give me grief becouase they could not track down graduate work (did it while an undergrad).

I eventually told them (politely) that if it was a critical requirement to take the job and stuff it. They backed down and offered the job.

Nope.

But I once had an interview with J&J and when I told them I had a 3.0 average in my two majors in college (comp sci and econ) they wanted to know why it was so low.

I just looked that them in shock, they were completely serious about that.

No one has ever ask to see my diploma however, on the other hand I have no way of knowing if they checked with the college I attended.

There was a story last summer about a coach of a college team who lied on his resume and they canned him. I cannot remember his name nor the name of the college, though. .

My friend had an interview with a law firm (IT job), and first thing they wanted to see was a transcript. Then they asked him for the major GPA. As soon as he said what it was, the interviewer took out a calculator and calculated it infront of him. Then he remarks, "Close enough".

I work for a consulting firm. We have to verify everyone so we can assure clients we provide the qualifications we claim to have.

my current job asked for an official transcript.

the new job offer i got from a different company did not. i'm sure they called the school i went to and verified that i actually graduated though. i actually asked the HR guy would they require transcripts and stuff. he said for people fresh out of school they usually do, but since i had been working for a year already, all they'd do is verify my diploma

My job is supposed to run background checks on everyone. I know for a fact that they don't. Recently the policy was changed and they at least run criminal checks on everyone and do credit/verify history on all managers.

My employer wanted:

1. College Transcript

2. Proof of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE or EIT) Examination. The proof was the certificate that was mailed out.

3. In order to get my "big" raise, they will want proof of passing the Professional Engineering examination.

....and this was for a state job (LA DOTD)

Yup! I am fresh out of college w/ a BS of CS and applied for a Software Engineer job. Luckily, they hired me. That was 2-3 months ago. 🙂

And during the process, they asked my GPA and required me to sent in my official transcript from school inorder for them to give me an offer.

Stop slacking and take the test already.

5 year background check for me. Here was one of the questions I had to answer:

"Have you ever advocated or participated in the violent overthrow of the U.S. Government?"

I have almost 2 years to go before I'm eligible 🙂

My wife is a recruiter for a major cell phone company. She hires for their call center wich is just hourly employees. They run a background check through a company that verifies education and a couple other things. I'd assume most people have no idea they run these reports. So, the answer is many do. However, it's not them running the report, it's a 3-rd party that whos only business is to run background checks and verification.

My wife got fired from a job for saying she had no injuries that affected her job... Yet they found out she had tendonitis (which did NOT affect her job) and fired her for lying on her app...

Most companies do background checks nowadays. The question is how deep do they go?

And you can't lie about MS certs... Those can be verified online.

I worked for a big aerospace firm, and they checked my previous employers, as well as both colleges that I attended, and my high school as well. They also checked my credit history and my criminal record in both counties I've lived in.
