Do your credit card providers raise your credit limit automatically?

Three credit cards here, only one has increased it in the past four years. The other two I don't really use often enough to justify requesting an increase, but it'd be nice from time to time.

I got a Capital One card very recently actually. Maybe about a month ago. At first, my limit was 10k. I just made 2 recent charges and they automatically upped my limit to 12k. Weird.

First cc I got has had yearly increases.
The other two have sat there for two years and one year, respectively. Oy.

My BankAm and Discover don't go up either. My Visa does.

My BankOne card went from like $800 to $1600 over maybe a year, and then hasn't gone up the past two years. I've spent more than ever on it and paid it all off on time, so I don't get it. Maybe $1600 is the max I can get without having any listable income.

MBNA keeps raising my limit occasionally even though I hardly use their card anymore. Most of my other cards have excessive limits without many increases anyhow.

Although you can request an increase online with Citibank, mine has been going up automatically.
The downside is, if you lose this card, the potential charge on it is as high as your limit :)

With zero liability, what difference would that make?

My Capital One Visa started at $200 back in '00 or '01. Now I have $5000. I've never had to request a limit increase. Interest rate lowered automatically as well.

Probably none. But then, I don't really understand why you need a cc with a limit higher than say, 5k. You are better off getting a specialized loan then with much more favorable terms.

You use it and it'll go up automatically. But there may be a cap to automatic increase. All my cards stopped increasing after 25k.

I just keep asking my cards to raise my limits every year or so... the more available credit you have always looks better to lenders and stuff because if you have $120,000 in available credit and you're only using 1% ($1000) then you are a good credit risk.

If your available credit is only $50,000, then that $1000 will be 5% and that gets high :)
