I've had bear. (Black bear) It's not that great.

Moose, caribou, goat... not bad. Bear is pretty gamey. It's hard to describe... They eat anything so they taste like everything.

My brother shot a young black bear. In our family, we eat what we kill, so we ate ground bear burger for a year. It was too tough to make steaks from. It was almost unchewable. We mixed one-third bear to two-thirds beef to make it edible. That was 40 years ago. My brother is still a hunter, but he has never shot another bear!

You don't know how to prepare it. It can be tender (and not too gamey) if it is prepared properly. If you soak a bear steak in beer for 24 hours before cooking it will always be very edible (it's gamey, no doubt about it, but much less, and GOOD).

My dad recently shot a bear and had steaks made out of it.
Your dad didn't butcher it himself?? Real-man card revoked.

"berry-bears" are the best tasting bears, if you're lucky enough to get one. (More common in Alaska than in the lower 48 afaik). A lot of people don't really like steaks from a typical bear that much, probably because it's a novel taste to them. However, I haven't seen anyone who didn't like summer sausage made from bear meat, or several other products along those lines (regular sausage, etc.) Most people don't eat hamburgers made out of the bear meat, but instead use it in place of regular hamburg in recipes calling for it (ex. chili, taco meat, casseroles, etc.) One of my friends just shot his 3rd bear this year... *very* rare that anyone in western NY has done that.

I've been hunting bears for a few years, but haven't had any success yet. I've been face to face with a 450-pounder once (less than 10 feet), but they weren't in season yet. (I almost crapped my pants.) Another time, some guys on dirt bikes on an oil lease trail below me scared one up the hill - I probably could have touched it as it ran by me (that's a scary sight - a 250 pound bear running almost directly at you) I'd prefer to get one with my bow; had to turn down a large one a couple years ago because it had a cub with it. Perfect quartering away angle on it though.

edit: if it's a garbage sow, it's going to taste bad.

I see no problem with eating bear, but have never tried it b/c there are not many bears in my area. I have eaten deer, rabbits, birds, pigs, etc... that people hunted.

Steak & Eggs? 😀

Sounds good to me... I just finished bacon and eggs for brunch. I'll be eating bacon and eggs every weekend for a lot of weekends til all this pork is gone. (It was quite delicious!)

Just steak, but eggs don't sound too bad right now either. Maybe I will cook some to go with the rest. 😛~

Me and the GF are having a little dispute about this question. My dad recently shot a bear and had steaks made out of it. She says it is "disgusting" to eat anything that you see on the side of the road while you are driving, specifically bear. She wanted me to post on ATOT for everyone to chime in their answers/thoughts. She says, "only cave men are supposed to eat bear." LOL. So.. what's the verdict ATOT?

You see bears on the side of the road?
I hope I see bears on the side of the road instead of homeless people.

Pics of said gf?

That's a great defense mechanism. Taste like crap, and nothing will eat you.

Now you know why turds are such great survivors.

Heck I'll try it. I've eaten escargo, sushi, duck, deer, lamb and moose. Bear seems to be a logical next step perhaps to be followed by octopus and swordfish (It's hard to get good seafood in the midwest).

It is actually very, very good. I am assuming it was a black bear as I am fairly sure polar are protected and grizzley arent to be fiddled with (they are very grisley). The meat has almost a sweet taste that you have to marninate accordingly to assure you dont end up with what tastes like candy. Over all it is quite good.
