Do you work with incompetents?

I'm surrounded by them. When I point out acts of incompetence that are screwing up the project and delaying the schedule and causing unnecessary work, my boss' repsonse is it's your project why didn't you check it out, like I can check everything that everyone I work with is doing at every moment.

Bottom line is you don't get in trouble for screwing up but you can for pointing it out. When layoffs come, it's usually the "trouble makers" that are let go and the incompetents that stay.

Guess I have to keep my big mouth shut and go with the flow.

Is it like this at your place of employment?

Well, I think it happens everywhere. And, it's not usually a good idea to point out incompetence to your boss. If you are a project leader, you are responsible to make sure the project is delivered on time. That's why, I like to be one of the coders.

Here's what worked for me, maybe it will do you some good also.

Have regular project meetings, and make sure there is a list of activities to be done by the next meeting and who is responsible. Review the list and update everyone's progress at each meeting. People seem to be more concerned about completing their assignments when their failures are on display in front of everyone else in the meeting. When I would go to people individually about where they were, I would often get a song-and-dance about why they couldn't get it done on time.

Over time, more people were getting things done, which put even more pressure on the few that didn't.
