The conspiracy theorist in me hates to think that Fox news and other media places post these vids to slowly rile up support for a full scale invasion of Syria, etc.

Yeah, I know that it sounds like a tinfoil hat conspiracy theory, but I'd imagine that Rupert Murdoch has plenty of friends in the defence industry that could profit from another ground war in the Middle East.

Fox News is basically a news platform for Republican talking points at this point, so what better way to drum up support for an invasion in say... early 2017 after they help to get Jeb Bush elected president?

I generally try to avoid watching real people getting hurt or killed, however, I believe sheltering oneself and living in a fantasy bubble of happiness is unhealthy for the mind.

So, I will watch documentaries sometimes that have very real graphic footage of atrocities, but its done to have more full understanding of whats going on, to learn a bit of the nuances and psychology of the situation and the survivors, not for the sake of watching a volcano of malignant depravity.

^^ I tend to agree. I don't shy away from difficult topics, but I don't deal with them without a real reason.

As much as I don't like agreeing with this notion....I think it's a pretty valid concern.

Years ago I'd never have believed or said that, but now that I'm a bit older/wiser and seen the political environment we live in, and how the media dictates what people see/think... I have reevaluated a few things.

Nope. I have no desire to watch it. Nearly everyone deserves some dignity in their death, especially when being executed for purely propaganda/agenda purposes. By not giving a view or even attempting to care about it it's the best I can do to honor that.

Once in a blue moon I'll watch something on liveleak, but I think they are unhealthy to watch regularly and so I said sometimes. I won't watch the jordanian pilot, and after seeing one beheading of somebody in iraq years ago I got my life's fill of that sort of thing.

not in awhile, they seem to be more difficult to easily come across and don't feel like searching for them.

No. After I watched Nick Berg getting his head cut off and being ROYALLY PISSED OFF! and sick to my stomach I stopped seeking out the garbage. The few images and articles are enough to be sickening.

When I was a teenager I came across the suicide video of some politician or somebody who pulled the gun in his mouth during a media conference or something. That was it for me and I'm still haunted by the image of blood flowing from his nose like a faucet.

Those emo kids are pretty obsessed with clockwork orange and face's of death but outside of being exposed to that, anandtech off topic is the only place I've ever seen such video's posted. Like the 1 hammer 3 dudes or ... that snitch lady in mexico. I should really stop coming here :(

No. I could, but what value is there in watching? It's not like a horror or war movie or anything, shit is real. I don't get a thrill from watching real people be tortured and killed, and in most cases there's no information the video can convey that the report doesn't.

That's a little different. That's educational because it provides a visual glimpse at genocide, which is a fairly rare occurrence, particularly on the scale of the Nazis. It adds an emotional component words alone couldn't really convey.

ISIS prisoners having their heads cut off or burned alive is different. I've seen enough of that in TV and movies to get the idea, I don't need to watch it to get the emotional impact.

Answered never but should say instead that I used to. Back in the early rotten.com days of the internet where it all was so new and unheard of in my innocent mind. Now I do not have any interest in seeing any more human suffering.

This is educational in a way too. People have a way of knowing the facts about something and believing them, but not REALLY believing them. It's like doublethink. They can know that someone's head got cut off by ISIS, but still in the back of their minds believe that no one in the whole world is depraved enough to saw through a person's neck with a big knife until their head comes off. At least you only need to see one video to put that to rest, but I do think everyone needs to see that one video in their lifetime. It tends to dispel some notions that they might not even know they are holding on to.

That's true, the problem with cognitive dissonance is that it's almost impossible to recognize except in hindsight.
