Then she hits your car, flops out on the ground holding her neck and sues you for blocking the lane.

How's that for a bright ray of sunshine?

One benefit of Michigans insanely high car insurance rates is that I'm basically indemnified against injuries beyond my deductible. Actually that's pretty much the only benefit.

Trying to get your obituary in the paper? In the US, people have been shot for less.

Meh. Sure it can happen anywhere but the biggest crime wave around here was the youts who ransacked unlocked cars for spare change and charging cables.

You're forgetting about the ridiculously high payouts on medical for accidents.

My first job was a bagger/cart monkey at a grocery store. I always return carts no matter the weather condition.

Only if you get hurt by a commercial vehicle. I know a few people who now have life long issues and got less than $150k

Got less than 150k? I was referring to the insurance paying the actual medical bills at the time of the accident under personal injury protection. In Michigan you can get up to 500k in medical bills paid for. If you get in an accident in Michigan and get hurt then you are a lot better off than nearly any other state. Most states have a minimum PIP of $0 to $30k that the driver can opt for. Michigan you get 500k.

This thread is bringing back memories of a thread I posted over 10 years ago. :)

Here's the story:

I was driving my dad to the grocery store and pulled into the parking lot. Keep in mind I was driving a 1984 Caprice Classic. I saw a parking spot and decided to pull into it. As I was pulling in, a woman was pushing her empty shopping cart. When she saw me she decided, for whatever reason, to deliberately push the cart with as much force as she could muster in my direction. My dad was like, "what is she doing?". Before I could say anything the cart slammed into my front bumper. The woman turned her back to us went to get in her car. My dad was not one to mince words and said "f---- her". He had me push the cart with the car right into the front of her car. When she bitched about it my dad said, "Did you learn something about being an asshole?". She got into her car and took off.

Leaving carts scattered around the parking lot provides jobs for some people. If everyone started putting their carts back in front of the store, the store isn't going to lower the prices of their products and some poor soul is going to be out of a job.

Same with used motor oil; just dump it into a creek or down the storm sewer...job insurance for someone.

Yup, I like aldi's setup. I keep a quarter in my wallet so I'll always have one ready.

I get a cart and then leave it strewn about the parking lot, forgoing the quarter. That'll teach 'em!!

Pathmark used that system way back in the 90s and it was less to replace the cart monkeys than it was to keep people from stealing the carts. In some inner city areas with heavy walk-in traffic people think nothing about taking a cart home and just leaving it on the curb. Surprisingly a 25 cent deposit helped control the number of people taking them off the premises. They even had a special token for loyal customers. You got a special Pathmark slug and it unlocked a cart and then you got your slug back when you returned the cart. Not sure if any Pathmarks still require cart deposits, but a couple of Shop-Rites in bad neighborhoods do.

Around here, it's the retarded folks. (by which everPC name you choose...mentally ill, mentally challenged, whatever) However, on the rare occasion when I use a push cart, I almost always return it or put it in a cart corral...but I'm usually one of the old farts cruising around in a cripple-cart...and unless the store sends a "helper" with me to bring the cart back, I return that to the store. It pisses me off when people leave them out in the rain to get fucked up.

I always do. I have a funny story though. An older man was too lazy to walk to the pen so he gave the cart a big push to get it back to the sidewalk next to the store. It crashed into a stack of ceramic pots and broke them all. The old man threw his hands up like George Costanza and went over looked around to see if anybody noticed. He fumbled around for a sec and then bolted.

It was hilarious

What ticks me off worse is the people that drive thorough parking spaces. They're not driving lanes.

I sometimes leave my empty cart at the front of a space so trashheads can't drive through.

Carts (not trolleys) aren't anywhere near as big as cars. Leaving a cart (not trolley) on the line between spaces leaves plenty of room in both spaces for cars to park in, but not drive through.

yup, if i use a cart, i put it back in one of the return areas.

if i see someone almost done putting their items in their car, i'll just offer to use that one and save them the trip. especially if it's an older person.

Yeah. Those things totally aren't known for careening off and hitting someone's car after you're miles away... but ignorance is bliss!

...but you aren't ignorant. Don't play dumb. You know that's why the cart corrals are there. It isn't just a place to put them. It corrals them from rolling away and drifting into cars.

It's bad enough when I can't open my door wide enough because some jerk next to me can't park and here we are talking about something that would make a similar frustration undeniably worse and more common.

If I'm close to the store entrance, I'll take the cart back inside so it can converse with it's brethren in the long conga-line. If I'm not close I'll take it to the pen.

One of my pet peeves (the other being people storming into an elevator before anyone has a chance to exit) happened a few days ago:
- I go to the store to pick up last minute Thanksgiving stuff
- There are carts in the pen, and I will usually grab one on the way in to use
- All done shopping, and I'm fairly close to the store entrance. After emptying my cart, I start walking it back to the entrance where all the other carts are in a neat line waiting for shoppers.
- As I'm beginning to walk back, a dude maybe 2 cars down from me gets out of his car and starts walking to the store
- I ask him 'you need a cart?', figuring he'll just take the one I'm returning. He says something like 'hey' and continues on
- I'm maybe 6 feet behind him and we both walk in. He grabs a cart from the line and goes in
- Me - wtf?
