Do you wake your pet up when they are having a nightmare?

My dog yips and my cat shakes when they are having a nightmare. It is sorta cute but I feel cruel not waking them up so I always eventually do.

They always look so pleased to be back in reality.

gotta wonder if its a nightmare, or just a very exciting dream. I wonder... but I tend to wake them up, by over break I was kind of cruel to my puppy and let her continue in the dream/nightmare world... just cuz she was so damned adorable when twitching and making little whines. She's vocal as hell when awake too, and its just adorable to have her at your feet doing her little purr/whine, she talks to us. lol

My dog doesn't really sleep if I'm awake - he'll lay there with his eyes closed, but if I so much as move he gets up....hence, I've never seen my dog have a nightmare.

In the past, someone had told me it's bad to wake them up in the middle of a nightmare. Of course, I have no proof that it's fact..

I've never observed ANY of the cats I've had dreaming, but with the dogs I've had, the soft, higher pitched yips and movement of the legs looks for all the world like they're dreaming of chasing prey.

So, no, I never woke them up.

same. My dog is so co-dependent it's crazy. When I lived alone I never closed the bathroom door so she would come sit on the bath mat whenever I whenever I did anything in there. Now she gets upset when i actually close the door, lol. She lays down in front of it to make sure I can't get away without here knowing.

I've never presumed to know whether it was a bad dream or a good dream, so I leave them to it.

I've woken up my cat a couple times, I'm guessing it was more of a vivid dream or something.

ditto.

ive never seen my lizard act like hes dreaming, so i just let him chill when hes sleeping. my bird will wake up chattering sometimes, and once he flung himself at the side of the cage with lots of screaming. im sure that was a dream that freaked him out or something, hehe. my dogs do the dream run all the time, but i never wake them up.

I never do because that's generally her deepest sleep (projecting based on human sleep, I realize). She doesn't wake up crying or anything so I don't think we've significantly scarred her.

Sometimes she yelps, and it's very funny. It's more like a high pitched expulsion of air than a yelp like when she's hurt though -- almost a huffing. She can get pretty agitated sometimes when she's out and has woken me up at night.

If it's a neutered or spayed cat, maybe all it's dreaming about is a life where it's got a hyperactive libido, and it's out gettin' it on with anything that's willing. I liked how Homer found out about sex:

"Zookeeper! Zookeeper! Those monkeys are killing each other!"
*whispers* "They're having sex."
"Oh."

To the uninformed observer, sex, depending on those involved, may look and sound somewhat violent and unpleasant.
I've never heard the sound of a cat in heat, either, but from hearsay, it seems that they can make quite an unpleasant racket.
Are they fighting? Are they having sex? Or is it Memorex?

No. I am suggesting that this "dreaming" they are supposedly doing is actually telepathic communication to other pets, planning their ultimate take over of the entire world by attacking the owners and deep frying their faces.
