In line.

I saw a comedian on TV over the weekend that kept saying On Line when talking about standing in a line and it just sound so weird to me.

On line is now officially used to mean using the internet.

Suppose there is a line of people. Do you:

(a) Stand in the crowd while waiting your turn.

or

(b) Climb up someone's back, stand on their heads, and stand on top of the line of people, looking like a cheerleader out of place.

"On line" is a colloquialism, unique to the New York area I believe.

My wife says on line, I say in line. I'm originally from western NJ, she's from central NJ.

In line, when I'm actually standing in the line.

On line, when I'm waiting for something on the internet.

Or, Waiting on a line when I'm serving a line of people.
