Do you use your DVD burner to read DVDs as well?

I just got the NEC 2500A, but it seems like every DVD I try to read comes up with read errors at some point during the process of using DVDShrink or DVDDecrypter. And these are pretty much scratch-free DVDs. Should I invest in a DVD-Rom as well, or am I just having bad luck?

I only have a Duron 950 with 512 Ram, so perhaps that's the problem?

The 2500A is very picky about any sort of damage or dirt. But if it's doing it on every disc, that sounds like a bad unit.

To answer your threat title, no. I have a CD burner for burning and reading CDs, a DVD player for reading DVDs and a DVD burner for burning DVDs. Why? Because while the CD burner is as fast as any reader, my DVD burner is not as fast as a DVD reader, CD reader or, CD burner. To me, it's only good for burning DVDs.

Considering my experience with using DVD-Burners for you purpose you are describing I would imagine the errors are due to your slow system performance.

Ideally, you want at least a P4 with perhaps 3.6mhz processor, or AMD equivalent, with a Gig of ram or more to burn DVD's efficiently.

Just my two-cents though.

I rip/read w/ an old 8x Toshiba DVD-ROM and burn w/ a Pioneer DVR-107D

Edit: My machine is only an Athlon XP 1900+ and it burns DVDs fine.

I have an NEC 5800C reader, I like to be able to do disk-disk with ease. Though IDE doesn't seem to do it as well as my SCSI setup did (Plex 40TSI+Yamaha 2100SZ)

That's a bit over kill IMO.

I'm ripping from a Samsung SD-816B on an Athlon XP 1800+ :)

What????

My DVD burner in my IBM R40 laptop with PM 1.3 burns DVDs just fine... albeit slowly... but it gets the job done.

He's seeing READ errors with DVDs he didn't burn. That suggests a faulty unit, or bad IDE controller, or bad IDE cable.

Well in DVD Decrypter, my Buffer % is always at 0, which is why I'm thinking it could be due to a slow system. DVD Shrink has returned errors as well.

I figure I'll need to place an order with NewEgg one way or another, but I didn't know if I should order a DVD-Rom in addition to an Athlon 2400 XP with more RAM.

Yeah... 3.6mhz iz overkill... better stick with like 1mhz or so.

isasir: the NEC 5800C DVD drive is about $36 shipped. It seems to rip CDs pretty damned good, I haven't tried DVDs though. It reads DVD+Rs just fine, and according to Nero's drive info it supports everything (including DVD-RAM).
