Do you use your corporate card....

No, I don't. My employer makes it crystal-clear that the card is for business travel related expenses only.

In fact, signing a "statement of understanding" is a condition of employment.

Let me guess: You're thinking "I can use the card today and pay it off before the next bill comes...no one will ever know."

Right?

Wrong.

If you've got a company card, your company gets a detailed list of any charges made to their cards. All of them. It's all too easy for some finance geek to say "Hmm, Joe Smith used the card on the 23rd. Our records show that he was NOT traveling that day."

*BOOM* Headshot.

Even if you pay the bill? Most places I have worked allowed you to do it, but you had to be sure to pay your personal expenses.

I know some folks who have been terminated for using it like it's their personal card. One woman went out and got tattoos and was terminated! She couldn't understand why she was let go!

My corporate card is in my name and goes under my credit, so if I were to use it for personal reasons I would just pay it off. However, I only use it for business related stuff. I have regular cards for myself.

Even if your company allows you to use it for personal stuff and pay the bill yourself... what's the value of doing that? 😕

I submit receipts to get reimbursed, then pay the bill myself, so there's no way I could stick the company with personal charges. However, it is a strict rule that you cannot use the corporate card for personal items.

I got into hot water a couple years ago when the rental car I used on vacation got charged to the company card (the clerk didn't swipe my card that I handed her when she saw I already had the corporate card in their system). Even though I obviously didn't request reimbursement, I got called on the carpet and had to explain what happened.

Why would you even need to use it for personal use? Who doesn't have personal credit cards they can use? Plus, you wouldn't get any cash back or rewards points with your corporate card.

It entirely depends on your company. In one company I was with, I could use the card for anything I wanted, but I was still responsible for paying the bill. I then had to submit an expense statement and get re-imbursed for authentic employment expenses. The company I am with now, we have corporate cards that are paid directly by the company, so all purchases on that card are to be business only.

I could see it being beneficial for those who are unable to obtain a CC.

No, I dont

my old firm received copies of all our monthly statements, the corporate card was strictly business use only

Many companies don't care how you use the corporate card. If you use it for personal items, then you pay for it. They pay the rest.
