I'm looking for a OS recovery program that works.

My pc crashed and I cannot reinstall win2k or XP upgrade off cd... it halts with error messages. I just need to recover files at this point.

It's a laptop so I cannot just slave it to another PC.


I think the file directory is corrupted, a dir on C: shows incorrect FREE space in my opinion... It should have about 500MB of free space but after running scan disk for about 3hrs it shows 15GB of free space... incorrect.

winternals' software sounds like just what you need -- I've used it extensively, and it performs as advertised with almost miraculous recoveries, but it's pricey. g'luck

edit: it won't fix your drive - you'll have to reformat and pray for that - but hopefully it can recover some/all of your data.
 
i just used it. it said all of my registry hives are missing... so taht's why it looks like a HD with no programs, no data.

could I use a data recovery program of some kind?
 
oh, nothing is wrong with my drive physically... it's all OS related to begin with. Thanks.
