Do you use the number pad to enter numbers?

I'm so much faster on a number pad (keyboard) then regular numbers. When working on large spreadsheets or just about anything else I use the number pad.

Also you can enter HEX with one hand on the number pad, other on the keyboard.

Yeah, got into the habit after using it for Excel for a summer job. Definitely better :)

Only when typing numbers in computer games with keypads, like Deus Ex and Crusader: No Remorse.

My main system is a laptop so no, but in a few days I'll have a nice, new Apple tower so that will no longer be the case.

As to the question, when I have a number pad I do usually use it to enter numbers if I've got a fair amount of them to enter. It's really whether or not I think about it or not. A lot of times if I've only got a few to enter(ie, password w/ numbers) I use the number row.

Do you use it without looking? Index finger on 4, middle on 5, ring on 6?

Not really. Then again, I'm using a laptop.

When I actually had a full sized keyboard, it would be half like that, half just using my index finger. I never really have to punch too many numbers into my computer.

If it's there I use it.

I don't have to look when I use the number pad but still will have to look sometimes for the top row numbers.

My grandpa using all caps and pecks at the keyboard :( I pity him. I love being able to type without even looking :D Numbers included ;)

That's how I do it. I can do it pretty quickly when entering a lot of numbers.

Entering numbers without a number pad is painfully slow.

Well that's the thing. I don't even know if how to use the number pad is even taught in typing these days. Back when I took typing in High School (80s) we had a special section on the number pad. Works out well. But then again keyboards didn't have number pads back then and it was an extra device.

Yeap. Except when I go to college, I'll be using a laptop most of the time, so I won't have a number pad =(.

They didn't teach it when I learned typing in school (early-mid 90s), but it's a lot easier to pick up than typing. I learned it when I had to use an adding machine extensively when I was a manager of a convenience store.

If you're like most college students you'll have high hopes of using your laptop extensively outside of your room, but it'll be almost permanently tethered to your desk. ;) At least that's how it was when I was in college. Everyone thought they needed a laptop, but they ended up just being expensive desktops. I used a full-size keyboard and mouse with my laptop - even carryed them around in my laptop bag if I went portable.

I use it exclusively except for the rare occasions I am on a laptop. I used to do a lot of accounting type thing as a part-time job and had to use an adding machine, which is just doing ten-key. At work as a chemist I enter in a lot of datum in the form of numbers so it is just faster and more practical to use the keyboard.
