I can tell a huge difference on my Samsung 191T LCD monitor. Everything is sooooo much crisper and prettier!

Depends on the card and the monitor.

A crappy monitor with a crappy VGA card will give terrible text quality, whereas just about any DVI monitor with a DVI card will give great text quality.

OTOH, if you have excellent VGA quality from your video quality and a good monitor, the text quality is very good.

IOW, DVI basically guarantees good quality, but with VGA it's hit and miss.

from a hardware standpoint, I'd rather have DVI-I because it will take analog or digital, its time to ditch D-SUB VGA connectors...

Using both analog and DVI mode on my Samsung 191T & Sapphire 9700NP,the main difference is DVI looks crisper /sharper,the image quality improvement with DVI is noticeable to my eyes.

DVI is the way to go.

Can anyone recommend a DVI card that is relatively cheap but good quality.

I'm not a gamer at all, just surf and watch dvd's. I do notice on my friends 1800FP with DVI the text is a lot crisper than my 1800FP no dvi

So I'm basically looking for a card to improve those two areas, and not really caught up on graphics speed for games

Thanks

I use a Radeon 9200 128MB @ $52 on my backup system, and DVI is quite nice going to my 1800FP.

I'm right now considering this GeForce4 MX440-8X Video Card, 64MB DDR DVI for $47 at Newegg for very much similar need like yours.

DEFINITELY. My NEC1760NX hooked up thru DVI to my now dead Radeon 9700 Pro, text and graphics were crisp and clear.

Borrowed a friend's GF4 MX 440 with VGA and I noticed a HUGE difference. Kind of baffles me actually how much better DVI looked.

Go with DVI. You won't be sorry.

it shouldn't have more vibrant color, just accurate color from what was intended. This isn't to say the same isn't possible with Analog inputs, but the DAC/ADC combination usually ruins that.

On my Viewsonic VP171b VGA looks as good as DVI, except that I have to always Auto-Adjust images with VGA. But otherwise there's a bug on the 9600 series that causes it to black-screen-on-boot with a DVI plugged in. That's why I have to use VGA, :(

Have you tried updating your video drivers? I have a 9600 NP hooked up via DVI to a NEC1760BK-1 and there is no black screen boot issue. The system boots up fine.
