Do you use Directory Assistance on your cell phone?

I have a friend who works in a call center, handling Directory Assistance calls. I sat in for a few hours, listening to calls, and OMG - I'm stunned.

You'd be shocked at how many people call, wanting help finding a number for a business THEY DON'T EVEN KNOW THE NAME OF. If you want the Psychic Hotline, don't dial *411, k?

Or they know the name, but spell it wrong. They'll never admit they don't know how to spell it, but they'll ask the poor working schmuck on the phone to look at eight different spellings.

Or eight different cities, because they "just know it's there, somewhere."

This may be the technological age, but you'd think this was rocket surgery.

Funny you should ask...my friend said some phone plans charge $5 per call. :shocked:

I know mine charges $1.50.

$5 is insane for a directory call. I bet you could get some quality service from a 900 number for $5

I only used directory service once in the past 10 years, only because I was under the assumption that I had a certain number of calls included in my plan. I guess I misread or something, got charged a couple of bucks and never dialed it again.

I don't know about high class, but people do call and ask for escort services in their area. :Q

411 from a cell phone is expensive. It's 1.49/call with VZW - I've seen people who have 30-40 411 Connect calls per month, and then call in wondering why they have $45-60 extra on their bill this month!

as i agree with OP on people needing to know where stuff is i will say this. Compusa that is located in Plantation FL comes up on the directory assistance as fort lauderdale and sunrise but NOT plantation. I used to work at this compusa so i know this well. Saying that they don't know what city is in i can understand being at times its listed under the wrong city.

I use this as well, only two or three times, but it's worked wonderfully. Even when I don't know the business name, just what I'm looking for.

But seriously, the whole point of the service is that you don't know the number, or maybe the place. And, at least in England, these places are advertised such that they can help you find the place you want, even though you may only know sparse details?

They had issues with their server a while back (hard drive had to be replaced), but everything seems to be working great on mine. What version are you running? I'd look into upgrading if it's an older one.
