Do you use both shift keys? or only one?

Which shift key do you use when typing?

  • Both with the same frequency

  • Left shift only

  • Right shift only

  • i don't need no shift key / I use caps lock for some reason.

I use them both, as I actually learned touch typing in high school, probably the most useful skill I gained in high school since my career was in computers.

If you don't use both you never learned to type properly.

Capital letters made with the right hand use the left shift key. Capital letter made with the left hand use the right shift key.

During my Freshman "typing" class I was wearing a cast on my right hand. Couldn't move my fingers over to right side of the keyboard. Still have bad habits developed during those classes. I don't even know that a right shift key exists and my right thumb never touches the space bar.

both, my 8th grade typing class using IBM Selectric typewriters and a mean as shit typing teacher taught me well.

 Same here. I use both.

I have no idea how often I use one over the other but if I'm capitalizing a letter on the right side of the keyboard, I use the left shift key. If I'm capitalizing a letter on the left side of the keyboard I'll use the right shift key.

I think some of this habit is reinforced by those of us who did FPS games on the PC for years. Left pinky is used to hitting shift to duck/crouch or run/walk. Left hand hit space bar to jump. Q was usually weapon swap.

Right hand is always on the mouse.

😛

only always use the left shift key. i type 100+ wpm so i don't find it a hindrance or anything when i have to use a capital letter that is near the key.

How the hell do you do a back tab, ~ or ! ? 😱

Back tab = left pinky on shift and left ring finger on tab. I actually had to look down to see how I do that it's so reflexive. Tilde and exclamation are the same. Left pinky hits shift and left ring finger hit tilde or number one key. Once I get to the number 2 on the number row I switch to my middle finger on my left hand. Left index takes over at 5-7 and then my right hand takes over at 8.

You've got really supple left wrist. 😱

😀

Ah, you bend your pinky under. That just seems wrong. 😀

Did you not play any FPS games with the "WASD" layout? I played Quake and Counterstrike for so many years my hand just naturally want to go to middle finger on "W", left ring on "A", left index on "D" left pinky on left shift and thumb on the space bar.

Whenever I put my hand on a keyboard I just instinctively do that. Pinky is "bent under" a lot in that layout.

I learned to type a little differently, with the left hand home key being the D and not the F. So my pinky is resting on the shift key at all times. Still manage to do 100wpm. Also it comes in handy for typos, I can just L-ctrl+backspace quickly and just type the whole word over without thinking about it.

How do you make a capital Z, A or Q without the right shift key? :hmm:

😀

i see your not a gamer... 😀

because shift is always either the "sprint" or "crouch" key... and well WASD keys are movement... and sometimes it requires us to use Q or E on top of WASD while holding shift down. 😎
