do you use a roadside assistance service?

I have AAA but I have never used it. I am always far more concerned about my vehicle breaking down in northern Wisconsin and paying $200+ for towing alone.

i'm thinking about using GM motorclub. they seem to have the best deal around...AAA service was decent and I hope GM is good too.

I've got AAA and I used it once when my brake calipers locked up. $6 to tow the car to may usual garage, and the membership basically pays for itself with the discount on car insurance.

AAA - used it for towing; I drive on long road trips often, so normally it's just a tire change that I don't want to do at 2am in the middle of nowhere, or a tow... Probably, over time, I've paid them more than I used them for, but it's great to have some number to call when you have auto problems and know someone will answer who will be able to help. For example, had a tire blow out outside of Las Cruces - I could have stayed on the I-10 at night and change it myself for the spare and maybe get hit by a car not noticing me on the small shoulder, or (what I did) call the 800 number and have a tow truck come out to help see how bad the damage was and eventually just helped me change the tire - but hey, a lot safer being in front of a huge tow truck than behind a small sedan at night.

I have AAA. Haven't had to use it, but almost did. You'll be glad when you lock your keys in the car, or lose them in the middle of nowhere.

I carry a full set of tools and jumper cables everywhere I go, as part of my "emergency kit".

A friend of mine has a box of medical supplies as her "emergency kit." No tools.

Another one has a box of condoms as his "emergency kit."

Interesting what constitutes an "emergency" for different people.

What discount?

State Farm - its an add on to our insurance policy and covers: flats, lock outs, jump starts, and towing.

My Expedition came with 100K of roadside assistance.
My auto insurance includes roadside assistance.
My Cingular/AT&T cell phone includes roadside assistance.

In 5 years, I've used the AT&T program twice...once for my daughter's car, once for a friend of my wife. (you only have to be with/in the car, not the owner)

In the past, we've had Allstate and Farmers, but never needed either.
If I was going to buy roadside assistance, I'd go with AAA. Far more side-benefits than any other auto club IMO.

Heads up for those of you using your Insurance company's add on for roadside assistance. I've heard many of them actually take your usage of the service into account when adjusting your rates. Kinda crappy thing for them to do, but just a heads up.

Insurance comes with it - provided by Roadside Assist, or something. I've had to use them about half-a-dozen times. Worth every (very few) penny.

We have AAA, but I know how to change a tire and jump-start a car, so that's really for towing and when the sh1t really hits the fan.

As others mentioned, most insurance companies (including Progressive which I have) have it as an add-on.

I've already used it twice in 5 months (once I broke down, once I locked my keys in the car). It was unbelievably easy and painless to do.

It cost a few bucks a months and I've already probably used $300+ worth of service.

I've only known AAA, I've used it maybe 15 times in the last 25 years. I've got the Plus which pushes the towing distance to 100 mi. I've been very satisfied.
