lanyard = cool?
I think it's more convenient than cool. It's a trend in our school, it seems like all the seniors and half the juniors sport lanyards. Maybe it's a way of showing off that you have a car?
Screw being cool. Function over form.
Lanyards are the function part, right?

Becuase I see mixed responses from this thread. To me, it's much more convenient, as long as you have the ones that don't disconnect (you'll have a lanyard hanging from your ignition, not fun

).
Yes, lanyards are the function that I was referring to. Others were mentioning the form (i.e. looks)... which I couldn't really care less about, in situations such that I am using a lanyard.
That said, I don't see the point in putting car keys on a lanyard, and I never have. When I routinely carried keys on a lanyard, they were 'master' keys to various buildings that I managed system in. As I could get into literally hundreds of buildings with a small set of keys, I really didn't want to lose them, yet wanted them at my fingertips at all times. The lanyard was the best solution for me. The keys were attached to the lanyard with a manual release, so I could detach them when necessary, and the lanyard was attached to my belt loop with a hook (can't remember the right name for it) that was designed to to fail on X tension (so if my lanyard were to get caught in something and start pulling, it would break away and hopefully not take me with it).
But car keys... that just seems stupid. You *only* use them when you're in the car, and they're otherwise in your pocket at all times. I certainly wouldn't want to have a lanyard attached to my ignition key (much attaching me to the ignition), and using a release mechanism each time you get in the car would just be... pointless, IMHO.
