the www is there for a reason. use it.

What's the reason? Stop making things up.

it's the host name for world wide web for that domain. It follows URL convention/standard.

what if you wanted to go to the web page for the domain sales.buyme.com. ? you should use www.sales.buyme.com.

me too.

If their IT department is too damn lazy to not forward the default DNS address properly, it's not worth my lazy ass to go visit it. www is just another subdomain suffix like wap, ftp, or pop. There's is no bloody reason on earth for website.com to not point to the same place as www.website.com unless www happens to point to an international portal. If anything, it's www.website.com that points to website.com. website.com is the default DNS entry and thus should be used likewise.

It's so much work to redirect people to www.blah.com, right? :p

*sigh*

theres no redirect. The admin for the domain was kind enough to put an A record for the domain. Without it you wouldn't connect, allthoug some browsers are kind enough to put a www in the DNS querey if you only type a domain.

It's actually annoying, because if you're using a subdomain, you can't use it. ex: www.forums.anandtech.com wouldn't work. It's like a placeholder.

It's not a placeholder, and forums.anandtech.com is not a subdomain. forums is a hostname and www is a hostname.

From the link you posted:

Succinctly, use of the www subdomain is redundant and time consuming to communicate. The internet, media, and society are all better off without it.

I leave off the www, but that's because IE (or maybe it's the google toolbar that's doing it, I'm not sure anymore) fills in the complete URL for me when I hit enter. I guess it's just using the address bar as a form of integrated search engine. If I type in "Anandech Forums", the address bar will automatically fill in with http://forums.anandtech.com, and then take me there.

Wheres the option for anandtech.com?

I don't type http:// or, most of the time, www. before I go to a site unless it requires it.

that .4 seconds is sometimes the difference between being able to get your pants zipped up vs an awkward dinner with mom and dad.

Is that a preyhunter refrence?!

www is a hostname.
forums is a hostname.
anandtech.com is a domain name.
forums.anandtech.com is a host name or fully qualified domain name.

Fixed.

(I know cPanel and other shared hosting control panels call it a subdomain to dumb it down)
