Do you turn your computer off?

i do every couple of days. When it seems laggy i normal reboot. Every now and then i turn it off thinking my comp needs a little rest.

Actually I have two comps, an HP and my custom one. I leave the HP on all the time, only time I ever turn it off is to reboot when I install something or update something. Since it only has 1 case fan, I'm not too worried about dust. The thing has been on for nearly two years and only a little dust collected around the rear exhaust. However, my custom one has three 120mm case fans, passive cooling holes everywhere, and cost about twice as much as the HP did so I'm a little more cautious with it.

only trime mine is off is when i need to work on it or im moving it

i think its been about 7 months sence i last had my computer off for more then 30 min

You'll get two groups here. (1) People who run distributed computing and think everyone else is a moron for shutting the computer off since running these programs is so fun to them. In fact they'll often spend thousands of dollars to have as many computers running as possible. (2) People who don't see the need to run distributed computing programs. These people often don't like the noise, dust, heat, electricity, and wear and tear caused by running non stop.

Well, my computer is definitely turned off by me, I haven't gotten the faintest hint of sexual attraction, it just sits there motionless, humming to itself. I don't know if its my looks, body odour or something.......

Oh! you meant the electricity thing, yeah, I do that.

Well, the reason I was curious is that I am afraid to turn mine off now. I messed with it for 3 hours yesterday because it wasn't booting, and now that it is finally up, I am very tentative when thinking about shutting it down. 🙂 pretty funny eh.

I put mine in "Standby" (S3) when I won't be using them for a while. This uses 5V for the memory and "reboots" only take about 5-10 seconds.

My main PC, I shut down when I'm done for the day. It backs up files every night, so I have the BIOS's RTC alarm wake it up, and it then shuts back down once the files are backed up. The files are sent over the network to a fileserver PC, which also acts as my digital VCR. It gets turned off about once a week, usually Saturday night into Sunday, as there are no shows on during that long timespan.

I can't afford to shut it down. It take almost a full 30 seconds to boot from "off" to the logon screen. Just think of all the computing I would miss if I waited for the thing to boot up everytime I wanted to use it. I also have three 120mm fans for cooling but no dust gets in my machine.

My main rig (P4 3.4c) stays up 24/7 with folding running. Sometimes it does weird things booting, and the wife and kid use it during the day. For a while I was shutting it off at night, but now I just leave it on so they won't have problems when I'm not there. Sometimes, I've thrown the switch and nothing happens, or I get a blank screen at bootup. These problems mysteriously go away and the computer eventually boots. I think my main rig is meant to stay on all the time. Thing is, my northbridge chip fan is making noise. I need to do the drop of oil thing and hope it works.

I shut down my gaming rig when I'm done using it. I have no problems booting that one and shutting it down every night.

I've only turned mine off if I needed to change hardware on it. It has powersaving anyway, and sure doesn't seem to impact my electricity bill any. And, it is easier on most electronics to not have to go through the power on cycle.

i turn mine off cause of a thing called bills.

why leave it on if your not using it? if you like wasting money and making your computer dirty,
by all means, leave it on.

but i dont get it... why waste money and make your computer dirty, seems stupid if you ask me.

i used to leave mine on all the time, and then i noticed i save over $20 a month by turning it off when i'm
not using it. $20!

I turn my computer off.

No matter what I buy it, it just won't fall in love with me. I just got it a AMD 3200+, no hug. BFG 6800OC, not even a phone call, 512MB Mushkin RAM, wouldn't even meet me for coffee... What's an ugly nerd to do?

p.s.
After the 1st sentence, it's all humor.
