Do you turn on your emergency lights when it rains hard?

I can't stand when people turn on their emergency lights because its raining hard. I wouldn't might if they turned them on and pulled off to the side of the road but they continue driving at a slow speed with them on! It just causes more confusion when a bunch of people have their emergency lights on. It makes it more difficult to tell when someone is turning/merging using their turn signals when cars around you are just blinking.

I noticed this happened more often when I was visiting Florida but I see it sometimes here in Virginia.

If its raining extremely hard where i can't even see the road in front of me, then yes i turn them on, mainly so the car behind me can see me.

I don't. But it was pouring the other day though, and some people had them on (South Florida..)

The point of flashers in that kind of rain is to get a brighter light for people to see without riding your brakes to the point of cooking them.

I don't. It was pouring hard (new york city) the other day and many people on the highway had them on.

I'm not really peeved by it, but I am more peeved by those that don't even turn on their headlights!

Or you can just drive slower so you do not have to ride brake or do brake checks. Or get a car with manual.

Yeah, OP... because increased visibility of other cars sucks!!!

There is nothing wrong with driving with your hazards on in severe rain. In fact, I highly suggest it. It helps stop pileups.

If your going less than 40- 45 mph,
on a divided highway;
by law in some states you Must have your flashers on.

If its pouring really hard, and vehicles are hard to see,
what makes more sense?>

Drive along slow, with no lights on, and have
a BIG Truck run you over, and kill you?>

Or be smart, and turn on the 4 way flashers??:cookie:

Oh my 1964 Plymouth doesn't have 4way flashers,
it was not required back then.

Huh? What does driving slower have to do with more visibility? The point is for people to see you at farther distances. There are only two ways to get a brighter light on cars without rear fog lamps, either ride your brakes or put on your flashers.

well that usually because its illegal to be going that slow and the only reason you would be going that slow is if something had gone wrong. Hence EL

The minimum speed law is ignored when weather requires it.

4-Way Warning lights FTW. :p It's rare that I use them, but I will use them when visibility and/or speed is extremely low.

Other countries have 'fog lamps' for just this occasion. When visability gets low you can use these extra bright tail lights so others can see you. Using the Hazard Warning lights while driving is dumb.

You should only have the flashers on if the vehicle is stopped. Driving with them on is annoying and dangerous.

But if 99.9% of all cars don't have them, what is the next best thing?

BTW Most Euro Cars have Rear Fog lights. Ever see Mercs that have their rear fog light on by accident? I see people do that all the time.

I know, I'm saying it's pretty dumb to not have them by law. HW lights just add confusion in bad light if there are 23 of them around you in traffic moving along.

Absolutely. But only if it is raining so hard that you have to slow down to 35 because visibility is so poor.

It's a way of telling those behind you - "hey man, it's really bad up here. slow down and be careful"

Same thing if traffic on the interstate slows down or is coming to a stop - flashers on.

... how is it annoying or dangerous? It shouldn't affect you in *any* way, other than to warn you that there's a situation you must pay close attention to.

No flashers, just regular lights.

When only one person on the road is doing it, it just causes confusion.

It's annoying and dangerous because the VAAAAAAST majority of the time flashers are used is on a STOPPED vehicle. Flashers = stopped car. People in general are bad enough drivers without being given misleading visual cues.
