I recently got a good deal on Norton Systemworks 2001 Professional ($15 directdeals.com)
and was running it this weekend...seams to work fine...i do have a queston about the registry cleaner...do you trust it? to work properly? or is the a history of it screwing systems up that I don't know about??

if you won't touch SW Reg Cleaner with a 10' pole, thenm what would you suggest to clean up the registry??

TIA

I've never used it but Norton has a good reputation. I use Cybermedia Uninstaller and it cleans the registry and I've never had it screw up my puter.

I use Norton's Reg cleaning all the time and as long as I only clean the enteries it suggest there is no problem been using the System Works 2000 version since it first came out

I prefer Norton over all of them, merely for the brand name security. However, RegCleaner is just about as good (maybe equal in basic performance), does not interfere with important reg keys, and can be d/led for free. Get it if you dont have Norton (though System Works is incredibly cheap right now).

I use Ontrack's Fix-It Utilities and the first time I ran its RegistryCleaner it found oodles of stuff that the MS RegClean missed.

I haven't used it, but it should be decent. RegCleaner is cheap: free, though isn't as thorough.

Most programs probably aren't very aggressive about pruning entries of of the registry for a good reason however. No one wants to wonder if their computer works properly after running it.

Let me put it this way. I used Norton's registry cleaner on a Win98SE machine at work. I just so happened to be my boss's machine (manager, really). It fixed the problem, and her machine worked for another 5 months without a hitch. Of course, being 98, it eventually died, even though it lead a pretty good life, but Norton did the trick. So if I had a problem with Windows, I would try Norton for sure, but don't run it if you don't have any problems - you might be asking for one ;)

I've used Norton since the DOS days and currently have Norton SystemWorks 2001. It works.
