I noticed when I go thru the Starbucks drive thru that there are little tip jars where evidently you are supposed to leave your change from your purchase.

other places seem to have similar set ups, with a tip jar next to the register.

I would think the employees are paid a regular wage and would not require tips.

what do you think?

Do we tip people at the bakery for putting those words on the birthday cake ? These places need to get a grip.

If people were openly and repeatedly asking them... "but where do I leave your tip", that's a different story. Putting out a tip jar asking for tips is fuct up.

I don't mind a tip jar, but in a place like that I feel no obligation to tip. That is one step above tipping for McDonalds. If you didn't bring it to my table and refill my drink or drive it to my doorstep you get no tip.

Nope, I don't tip at places like that when it's only a single serving.

Now, if I was one of those people who spent hours at the same coffee shop who got several refills or repeat service (ie, like the show Friends), then I'd probably tip. That is somewhat similar to service you get from a bartender, and tip worthy IMO.

In agreement with most people here..I tip well at restaurants, but I don't make it a habit to tip at Coffee shops, or fast food places and such with "tip jars"

Yes. Usually at least 20%, I was in the business for a while and know how much your salary depends on tips. Ok, I mostly don't tip at drive-thru's or pickup counters, unless it's a local place (not a starbucks, dunkin, etc).

I generally tip 20-25% at a sit down restaurant, maybe 30% for a pizza guy if I made him wait or the weather's bad.

no drive-through tipping... nope.

unless these are like give-a-penny--take-a-penny jars.

The people who work at the coffee stands around here make more money in tips than I do delivering pizzas.
