He is a cable tech making around $17-25hr, unless he hooks up free hbo I see no reason for tiping. I see no reason to tip someone that makes more than $15 from their employer.

I asked a Comcast tech about that once and he said it was against company policy to accept tips. Not sure if that's actually the case, but I'd have to go with no, you don't tip the cable guy.

No unless you ask for extra cables, spliters, ppv, special cabling, or you had the tech hookup all your devices to your new cable box or something. You will be lucky if the tech shows up on time.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll see if he can hook me up with some free playboy. I'll give him a fat 20 and all the beer he can drink.

I tipped the Verizon guy $20 for lunch on Saturday since he was there from 10-2pm. He had to climb up and run the lines 400ft to my house and it was hot outside. I was also happy to finally get my Fios installed :D

My buddy used to be a cable tech, and even when he hooked up stereos for simpletons (who couldn't figure out yellow goes to yellow, red goes to red, and white goes to white) I never heard of him getting a tip.

no unless they do something completely above what they're required to do but you should offer them something to drink when they get there...that's just common courtesy

I don't tip monetarily, but I do offer him a drink or two while he's working on my cable line.

Ha! After waiting three weeks for my service to just be transferred, I am making TW run all new cable......and of course they are not getting a tip.

They make enough. No one tips me for the problems I solve...

"uh... a beer would be fine"
"sure thing!"

(wait until he leaves)

"uhm cable company... why do your installers feel the need to get liquored up before doing their job?"
"excuse me?!"
"yes, the installer your company just sent over reeked of cheap beer. this is unacceptable and very unprofessional."
"i apologize. we will look into the matter and in the meantime enjoy 3 free months of service on us. once again i am truly sorry."
"yea well you better be!" [slams receiver down]

I don't understand how you could even think that tipping might be appropriate in this situation.

A coworker mentioned it and it surprised me because i've never tipped before. So i thought i'd ask the ATOT community to find out what the proper etiquette is.

Well, first off even if its against company policy that doesn't mean they won't take a tip - they just won't tell the company about it. I am not supposed to take tips from people and I will refuse twice, but accept when it they insist a third time.

As for tipping the cable guy - i would say in most situations no - unless he really goes above and beyond. I don't think I deserve a tip when I do my work - I mean the customer is paying for it either as a separate bill or as part of their monthly bill. But they do offer alot - I think they feel bad when they watch me move their 500ton 36" Sony tube tv up 3 flights of stairs to their 120 degree bedroom and then mount their 58" 170lbs Panasonic Plasma to their wall

LOL

I should have been more specific and said soda, water, or juice.

Yeah. I'm just glad if the cable guy is actually competent enough to diagnose the problem at all.

Tipping in general just sucks. 1) Pay the people to do a good job. It works in many businesses. Walmart: no tipping. You're expected to give good service. The warehouse: I don't get a tip for stacking a pallet neatly. It should be the same with other businesses.
2) It makes for a lot of "Yet-AnotherTipping-Thread" posts.
