do you tip pre or post tax?

had a discussion with a friend... he tips on the total price, i tip on the sub-total, e.g. before tax is added.

granted, the difference is usually under $5 but i was arguing on principal.

when our combined sales tax was 15% I just gave them whatever the tax is. now that the tax is 13%, I have to bump that up.

I look at the total, take 10%, then add half of that amount of top of it. I hate people that go nuts over things like this.

I double the sales tax (8.125%) and round up to the nearest dollar. If service was bad, I round down and maybe subtract another dollar.

Tax here is either 7.75 or 7.25 depending where you're at, so it's easiest to just double that and round. Don't worry about the exact amount.

btw, if the service is bad, don't tip. If the service is REALLY bad, tip a penny. no tip means the person might be cheap, but a penny is saying "you suck!". But if the service is good, tip extra.

That's a bit childish. If you didn't like your service, talk to someone who can address your problem. Tipping a penny at any non-Applebee's quality restaurant is likely enough to get you kicked out for good.

If you don't like the service, you can always just complain respectfully.

I've never tipped a penny, but I've worked at a restaurant. 🙂

Usually the after tax amount. The difference on the average ticket is so small as to not really matter to me.

If the service is good, then it's a standard tip. It's got to be better than good to get extra.

Food:

Fuck food. Who just goes out and eats food? I only eat at non-franchised, locally owned places and I almost always get a beer or three when I go out to dinner. I tip 20% of the final bill unless you've really done something to make me mad, which is almost never. I rarely ever get upset with people in any service industry. I'm only there for an hour and they have to be there 40 hours a week. Most of the time they are doing the best they can't to provide fast, accurate service. On top of the 20% they normally get I give them an extra $1 for every drink I have. So a 20$ meal with 2 drinks gets you 6 bucks.

Bars:

I normally only drink where I know my bartenders by name. If I don't know your name and you tell me your name without me asking I automatically like you and I tip about 40%. If I don't know you and you aren't interested in getting to know me then you get $1 dollar for every drink I have, no matter how expensive the drink is. It takes just as long to pour a jack and coke as it does to pour crown and ginger. The price has nothing to do with the bartender.

Stop being so cheap and learn to only eat and drink at places that respect your service. Then you can stop being a customer and start being a guest and get treated much better. I can't tell you how many times tipping well and getting to know your servers and bartenders ends up with free drinks and good times with the staff when they aren't working, or even when they are working.

IMO, the difference between pre and post tax is negligible for tipping purposes...after all, 15% of 8% even on $100 only adds up to $1.20.

I look at 15% of the total bill (including tax) then determine how much to actuall tip. It's rarely exactly 15% anyway. if 15% worked out to $4.57, they'd probably get $5...or $4 if the service wasn't up to par...or nothing if the service sucked.
