Just curious, is gratuity typically included at these places as part of the meal cost? Or should I factor in another 50-100 for tip? Should you tip in cash or is card fine? 13 course tasting menu here I come yum!

Aren't you generally expected to tip even more than the normal percentage in a very nice restaurant? It's like if you can afford to eat one meal for $200, you can also afford to tip at 30%. Treat it like taxes OP. You just entered a higher tip-bracket.

I tend to agree on this.

I don't think they make food I'd pay $200 for; maybe oysters with gold ingots inside...

Don't know why I am offended by this question ... when many in this economy work their entire week to net this much.

I need to get a thicker skin ... or the OP should consider the times and respect those who struggle just to make it through the week with less.

people are fucking DYING out there in the world and you're on a fucking internet message board talking about first world problems.

you are what's wrong with everything.

$200/13 courses = $15.30 a course and probably 3-4 hours worth of dining; all things considered, not that bad.

there is infinitely more value in eating at a fine dining restaurant than say, going to a baseball game.

Haters don't be hating, it's not like I do this all the time, it's a once or twice a year kind of thing and definitely the most expensive I will have ever done to date. Hence, why I'm asking about proper etiquette. It includes a wine flight which I assume will have 6 or 7 wines as well. Should be a fun experience.

Thank you. That clarifies everything for me.

Question: What have you stuck up your anus to make you the dick that you've become?

Where is this $200 13 course tasting menu?

It actually sounds reasonable compared to some top NYC restaurants.

If tip is included it will say. Even then, I leave an extra $20 to signal good service.

If it is not included I leave 15-30% on the after tax amount. Depending on how much I enjoyed the service and food.

I actually save money by eating out at super high end places. After being to Per Se, I can't eat at normal restaurants anymore. It's just not as good. When I see the menu all I think is "BORING!" and then when I eat it I think "TOO PLAIN! WHERE IS THE FLAVOR?" So I end up cooking at home (it also helps that I went to culinary school, so I know how to cook well). I only end up eating out twice a month.

I just don't value food that much. For me to spend that kind of money on food, I'd have to be rich enough to completely not give a shit. IOW, I'd be just as likely to give it to a homeless guy as spend it on food that expensive. I'd have more fun, and get more enjoyment out of a cheeseburger and Guinness at the pub.

I'm not sure..I don't go to anywhere it would cost me $200 to eat one meal.
Tipping should be 15% or better.
There's a lot of nice places to eat in my town;not sure it would cost that much anywhere. Is there an under-the-table bj included or something?

I've never been to a "$200+ a plate" restaurant, though I have been to many restaurants that cost $100+/person by the time the dust settles and food and drink are factored in. I normally tip 20% whether it's a cheap Asian place or fine dining, and round up from there. If it is a particularly cheap meal relative to the amount of service I've received I might tip closer to 25 or 30%, but this is the exception rather than the rule.
