Do you tip at a hotel?

not for room service or someone carrying your bags, but:

so, basically just had a discussion w/a friend about this topic.
personally i've never done it before and neither have my parents.

but this guy says that you're supposed to leave $1 or so for the cleaning crew...
says it's just like giving a tip for waitresses~

do you?

p.s. I've never heard of such a thing and again have never left money for housekeeping.

PPS - if you do, why?
'cuz your parents did it?
outta the goodness of your heart?
you want to give away your money?
"you're supposed to" ?
etc.

You're supposed to.

I always leave the do not disturb sign on my door so they don't have to clean my room, then leave a tip at the end of the trip.

I personally do not and never have simply because no housekeeper has ever done anything above and beyond their normal duty. (and otherwise, i am a BIG tipper no matter who... waiter, etc.)

The only thing that has come close is when we were in FLA and i left our ipod in the room and checked out.
finally, a week later flying back home i realized it was gone.
when i got home, i called the hotel and asked if it had been turned in. I was sure our housekeeper would have taken it, but they did not and gave it to the manager.
They mailed it back to me that day. I was so impressed, i sent a very positive letter about the manager and the staff to their corporate office.

out of curiosity: if you leave that sign on the door - then they don't clean your room, right?

if so, why tip them since they're not cleaning it?

(i may not have understood your statement as i never use that sign)

I never heard of such a practice.

In general, I just don't like tipping. It adds complexity and uncertainty to simple transactions.
I worked in retail, and I was expected to give good customer service without the possibility of tips. Any other job should be the same way - get a fair paycheck, and in response, you give good service.
It's got to suck too if a customer's being a jerk, but you still are obligated to be nice to them in the hope of getting a tip that may not come.

They clean it when I leave. They cleaned it before I got there.

Got it!
makes more sense now.

I usually just leave them the change I accumulated during the stay, which usually amounts to just nickels and pennies.

If I'm staying one or two nights on business at a cheapo hotel I don't bother unless I get some kind of special treatment because I do the "do not disturb sign" thing myself & thus no service is required.

If I'm on vacation for a week I tend to eat room-service breakfast every day & make a huge mess, so I'll leave a nice tip for the maids... at least $40-$50 is my normal amount, with $10 coming on day-one ... not coincidently I just about always get treated like a king by hotel staff.

Waiters/Waitresses
Valets
Pizza Delivery Guy

That's it.

so you stiff the person who cuts your hair and cab drivers??

No, but I have mostly been to seedy hotels in foreign countries where I don't trust them not to steal all my stuff. For that reason I make it clear that I don't want anyone to clear my room. If I'm only there for a few days the room doesn't need cleaning anyway.
