Do you throw away jury duty notices?

I just got my first notice (I'm 19) and I'm planning to just change the address to my apartment address where I go to school so I don't have to go.

I was planning on just tossing it since they can't track down the letter, but I'm thinking about doing it if they send me another one in the other city.

Would they do anything to you if you just discarded the letter?
 
I know people who have tossed them out for years. I think the key is to keep not responding. That way they never have any acknowledgment from you.

Just toss it, .. but u can use it if you work to ur advantage

I know it's stupid to just ditch jury duty, but they're too strict on the time slots. I don't feel like missing any classes this semester because I screwed up last time. The longest I can postpone is my first break, but I've planned a vacation this winter break. If they gave me a time in the summer, I'd be glad to go.

Yep....if you go once they will keep calling you about every year or two since you are reliable. I used to get called about every year and I always went. After I did this about 7 times I finally realized that I will never be picked for a jury since I am from the wrong demographic group and I have been throwing them away ever since.....I did my civic duty more so than others and once I realized I was never going to be picked it just became a civic hassle and I stopped going. Funny thing is, since I threw that notice in the trash I have never benn called since, and that was 7 years ago.

Let them know you are a student and you will be waived from Jury Duty.

I went when I was called, told them (truthfully) that I had a doc's appt in three weeks, and since it was a long murder trial, they let me go. They won't call you for a year after you go in.

I agree, If I were ever called I'd go in a second. I think since I recently changed counties I got passed over or something.

for me, it went down like this. u go to the courthouse... sit around for like an hour. they make u read some stuff. i was obligated to be at jury duty for one trial, or two days... whichever was longer. on the first day i went... the case was plea bargained, so the lady who worked there told us we were done. then she also mentioned that there were no cases scheduled the next day, so we did not have to come in, and our jury duty was completed. lucky me. and they cut me a check for $5 too.
 
i was wondering... when you check "english knowledge is unsufficient", do they call and check how do they know it's true?
 
I just got a notice the other day...the second I've gotten in the last year and a half. Last time I had to call the night before, and since no jury trials were scheduled for the my day, I didn't have to go. I hope I don't have to end up going this time, either.

We get $25 for jury duty, though. 😀

I've only been called to serve once, about 3 years ago, and I loved almost every minute of it. Got on a nice little 3 day criminal trial, very fascinating to see our justice system at work.

You can only have a warrant out for you if they sent the form to you certified mail with your signature on it, to prove you got it in the first place. There's routinely thousands of people who do not live at home, in the service overseas, and such. It's no different than being served papers to show up in court to testify.

 
I got one threw it in a trash and nothing happen, didn't get arrested or fined $1500

i moved recently and never update my address with dmv so if they send me any more jury notices i would not know
 
Yeah, the cool part about throwing them away is that they can (may) issue a bench warrant for contempt of court. You get pulled over for a traffic violation, then get hauled in and your car is impounded.

You get to pay bail to get out, pay to get your car out of impound, then screw around having to go to court and explain to the nice judge why you think all this jury sh*t is a waste of your valuable time ...

Someday you may find yourself needing a jury trial (criminal or civil) .... and you'll be sitting there looking at a panel of people that were just "too stupid" to get out of serving ...

EDIT: Most, if not all, states require that you change your address to the DMV within some period of time (90 days?). Faillure to do so can get your license yanked. There may be other repercussions as well.
