Do you think you can predict a mobo platform's lifespan?

I never really paid attention to motherboard platforms (e.g. socket 939, AM2). Can someone who's been paying attention let me know what they've learned? Can one ever predict how long a platform will last at its outset? How long do you think LGA1366 will be around?

In my limited experience, it seems like there's no point focusing on the socket in an effort to future-proof. (I got a socket 939 thinking I would upgrade the CPU but never got around to it.) Is it fair to say one should not worrying about sockets except to make sure that it will fit the desired CPU?

I would say the only thing really worth paying attention to in this regard is whether the end of any given platform is in sight. The end of S775 is here (Core iX). The end of AM2 is here (AM3). That doesn't mean these platforms aren't good buys or have many months or even years of life left in them (I'm still running a 939 system). But if you're future-proofing, I don't think either of them is a viable choice.
